My name is Micky and I go by Skeleton Jack in game. Some of you have gotten to know me a little bit over the past month or so, but I felt like it was time to share a little about myself. Where I came from and how I got here.
I'm 36 years old and was born in Michigan, but my family moved south to New Orleans very early on while I was 2 or 3 years old. And while I have spent the vast majority of my life in New Orleans I lived for years in Atlanta, traveled many times north and east of LA, and I have been to Europe once as a child on a religious pilgrimage. My family life was/is a bit dark (most of them aren't good people), so we'll skip past that to keep this mostly light and fluffy. :) Like my dad! My dad was in the food and beverage industry my entire life while he was still alive. I grew up in restaurants and hotels as a child, and it was pretty much amazing!! Ever seen a movie where some kid's dad/mom was the boss in a hotel, and all of the staff, chef's, etc... did stuff for him while he randomly explored the place like it was his castle? That was me growing up. :) It probably had a huge impact on why I got into waiting tables (mom&pop, commercial/corporate, banquet, etc...) for about 10+ years. It was something I really loved doing, and in a way it connected me to my dad. Especially after he was gone. Nowadays I am a Dispatcher for the Federal Pilots in the lower MS river (Baton Rouge to the Gulf of Mexico). Total deviation I know, but it's a really good job. But getting back to gaming...
I got into gaming early with table-top RPG's (I started with Gamma World at 10), and later on local BBS's dialing up on 2400 baud modems to play Tele-Arena (an early MUD) during high school. And I've been hooked ever since. But it wasn't until City of Heroes and WoW that I finally became a "hardcore MMO'er". And when I say that, I have to be honest and include that I was a bit of an elitist prick during that phase. But then I got over myself and started a blog called skeletonjack.com (currently defunct) which I am still extremely proud of to this day. (The best thing I ever did with it was to raise over $5000.00 for the daughter of one of our guild members who was 6 years old and had cancer. I held a raffle for 20,000g from my personal stash hoping to get her a few hundred dollars, but we were blown away with the response.) The website was for Death Knights in WoW and ended finally with 3.9 million hits and 7.6 million views in 1 1/2 years. It's purpose was to educate fellow Death Knight players on how to play WoW better, while deviating from the EJ model (Elitist Jerks forums for WoW which dictated the only "viable" builds). I would create builds and guides that would deviate maximum dps margins by 3-10% ish to allow for play style/fun choices while still maintaining a high numbers. And I would also educate players on how to bring up their performance and skill so they could enjoy their game "their way" without being berated by pugs, etc... I was in the 1% of the 1% at that point, top 100 US guilds (finally in a rank 7 US guild), killed Muru pre-nerf, etc... But my play style, personality, performance, and desires never met up.
I earned my spot playing in the upper echelons, but found that most of the people I was playing with were jerks. And while some of those top end players are super nice and awesome, there are a significant number of them who are "not awesome" to put it mildly. Combine that experience with MMO burn out (I was spending about 50+ hours a week on MMO's back then for over 6-7 years), and I fell out of everything in gaming. It was during my burnout phase about 2 years ago that I found out about Gaiscioch from Rift Junkies and joined up, but I really wasn't ready to get back into MMO's yet. And while I picked up GW2 on release, I quit within the first 2 months. Which leads me to present day.
I wanted to get back into MMO's again. Finally! They are by far my favorite style of video game on the market. But I spent a solid month thinking about whether I wanted to get back into all of this again, which game to play, who to play with, etc... And thinking long and hard over my best memories in MMO's they came down to 3 main things. The group of people I played with in City of Heroes, my time in Category 5 in WoW (my guild during most of vanilla), and my time in Sleepless Knights (my guild in vanilla, BC, and LK). My best memories while playing MMO's all revolved around the people I played with at the time, not the actual games themselves. Something that is common sense and practiced here, but wasn't apparent to me at the time. And that was when I remembered Gaiscioch.
I saw FF Reborn was new and wanted to get into something fresh, where other players were still on a learning curve. But I found out that FF wasn't one of our Chapters. So I sucked it up and got back into GW2 so that I could become a part of the main community within Gaiscioch and go from there. It's now 54 days in according to the website dashboard and I am taking a moment to raise my head up and look around. And I'm pretty happy to be here. If it wasn't for you guys I would have probably already let my FF Reborn account lapse, I wouldn't have come back to GW2 at all, and I wouldn't be involved with an online community that I wanted to take a hand in being a part of. So thank you for being you and letting me be a part of this.
P.S. I tried to repost this in New Member Introductions and delete this one. Can't find a delete button, so was going to just edit title to delete and remove text and repost, but couldn't post in new member area? Not sure what I did wrong...
