Crowfall is a new Massively Multiplayer Online Game brought to you by Gordon Walton (Executive Producer of Ultima Online,The Sims OnlineStar Wars: Galaxies and Star Wars: the Old Republic) and J. Todd Coleman (Creative Director of ShadowbaneWizard101and Pirate101).

A seamless blend of an MMO with a large-scale Strategy game!

Players control the universe, to shape as they see fit.  We call it a Throne War Simulator, and it’s different in three fundamental ways:

Eternal Heroes, Dying Worlds.

Characters are persistent, but the Campaign Worlds are not. Players are Immortal Champions, traveling between realms to fight in an eternal War of the Gods.

Each Campaign World is a server or "realm".  It exists for a limited time – typically 1 to 3 months -- or until some win condition is met.

During this time, the World will change.  Each Campaign has four stages: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

With each passing season, the World grows more deadly as the land is consumed by an unstoppable legion of undead -- The Hunger.

At the end of Winter, the Campaign is over. A victor is declared, the map is wiped and that World goes offline forever...

...but the characters are NEVER wiped.  Instead, the participants take their winnings back home to the Eternal Kingdoms, to prepare and strategize for the next Campaign.

Everything Changes and That Changes Everything.

The Worlds are made of voxels (like Minecraft, only much less blocky) – which means the entire World is destructible.  We are harnessing VoxelFarm technology to generate an endless succession of unique and interesting Campaign Worlds for you to mine, shape, conquer and destroy.

Our Campaign maps are procedurally generated -- meaning that we automate the process of creating every mountain, forest, river, castle and abandoned village.  Each World is different, which means that the game of territorial conquest will be different in every Campaign.

The beginning of each Campaign is like the first round of Civilization: players are dropped into a harsh environment, surrounded by Fog-of-War. The Worlds are filled with deadly monsters, haunted ruins, abandoned quarries... and the most dangerous predator of all, other players.

Craft weapons, scavenge armor, secure a stronghold, forge alliances and conquer the World.

Allies. Enemies. Empires. Betrayal. Risk. Conquest.

There are two types of Worlds in the Crowfall universe: the Campaign Worlds, which produce materials (stone, iron and wood) and the Eternal Kingdoms, which are barren of resources -- but last forever.

If each Campaign is like a soccer match, the Eternal Kingdoms encompass the entire season!  Unlike the Campaigns, these Worlds are permanent -- and they are completely managed and owned by the players.

Players act as rulers -- they can divide up their domains into provinces and grant those lands to other players.  Benevolent monarch or iron-fisted tyrant, what kind of kingdom will you rule?

The Eternal Kingdom can be massive -- with mountains and rivers, castles and villages, dungeons and ruins.  They are also devoid of resources: stone, iron and wood.

To gain the resources necessary to build structures and craft items, players will have to participate in Campaigns... or treat with those who do.

Since each Campaign World is unique (and time-limited) we can change the rules of the game from one to the next!

What rules?  Things like…

  • Which races can participate in this Campaign?
  • What is this Campaign’s duration or end-condition?
  • How are the teams broken up? Is this a War of the Gods? Guild-versus-Guild? Free-for-All?
  • What resources can be scavenged? How abundant are they? How harsh is the game of survival?
  • What are the rules for death and respawning? Do items decay on death?  Can I loot the corpses of other players?

The Worlds of Crowfall are divided up into discrete zones, and each one circles around the Hunger.  The closer a World is to the center, the greater the risk  -- and the higher the reward!

Each Campaign will be different. You (and your guild) can decide which style is right for you.  If you change your mind, you can always try a different Campaign... with a fresh start, every time.

These player-owned and player-managed kingdoms are the only permanent (non-time limited) Worlds. They are complete, functional Worlds - but lack resource factories (such as quarries, mines and mills) and produce only common reagents. Players rule these Home Worlds as Monarchs and can grant land and titles to other players in exchange for oaths of fealty. Levy taxes, enforce trade restrictions, and set the PvP rules within your domain.

The proving grounds for Order, Balance, and Chaos. Players join one of three divine Factions and battle for control of the World. The goal for Order and Chaos is to capture as much territory as possible before the World is destroyed. The goal for Balance is to ensure there in no clear victor between Order and Chaos.

These Worlds are more deadly and the stakes are higher. The alliances of the Gods hold no sway here. The followers of the twelve Gods vie individually for the Throne.

The Shadow Worlds lie closer to the Hunger, where even the Gods dare not tread. On these Worlds it's Guild vs Guild competition for the abundance of resources and rich cache of souls.

On the razor-thin edge of the Hunger lies the Dregs... Worlds utterly drained of warmth, about to shatter into dust. Alliances between Guilds are weak and brittle. These every-man-for-himself Worlds are deadly and unforgiving - yet they yield the greatest reward for those who can survive.

You are an immortal Champion of the Gods. Campaigns come and go, but your heroes will live on -- and continue to advance, from one Campaign to the next.

Heroes are created using a deep character customization system, with user-selected Advantages and Disadvantages.

Start with a base archetype (such as a Knight) and add advantages (such as "eagle eye", which increases archery skill) and disadvantages (such as "weak heart", which decreases endurance -- but frees up points to spend elsewhere).

You can create and manage multiple characters and participate in multiple Campaigns at once -- each with unique powers, skills and resources!

Each hero archetype represents a core role and play-style. For instance, certain heroes will be extremely effective in combat situations while others excel at crafting and resource management.

Though each role is initially balanced for distinct specializations, players will have MANY ways to customize their hero's stats, appearance, abilities and gear!

As characters grow they can collect up to three Disciplines, which are sub-classes such as archery, blacksmithing, or bounty hunting. Disciplines can dramatically alter and enhance a character's skills and capabilities.

Our goal for this Kickstarter is to fund the core module of Crowfall.

How many games can you play with a standard deck of cards?  Poker, Blackjack, Bridge – the variety is endless. Think of the core module like our baseline deck of cards. This is the foundation of the game, on which all the variant rules sets can be built.

Much of the core module work has already been done; we are looking to the community to help us finish it. Specifically, we will use these funds to build:

* The core module is estimated to be delivered by Winter 2016. First release (with partial functionality) will begin alpha testing in late Summer 2015.

Our company is new, but our team has been doing this for a long time. J. Todd Coleman was the Creative Director of ShadowbaneWizard 101, and Pirate 101Gordon Walton was the Executive Producer of Ultima Online, The Sims OnlineStar Wars Galaxies, and Star Wars: the Old Republic…and that’s just the founders of ArtCraft!

The team we have brought together includes key members of many of the MMO’s that you’ve played and loved. We know how to build MMOs. Now we want to build something new.

I am hoping for this one also.

However, it was pointed out that at release the only available campaign rule set will be "The Dregs". That is a free-for-all PvP full loot rule set and that appears unacceptable. I did do some research about the other campaigns and all I could find is that "The Dregs" will be the baseline used to determine game balance. There have been some hints/rumors that additional campaigns will appear as a stretch goal (maybe two).

Sadly, as the game is conceived right now I will not even advocate it. When (If) the other campaigns are added to it, I may. I have been burned by to many FAILED PROMISES and never appearing content.

I too have reservations about this game. Looks like the platform for greatness but developer choices seem to be hindering success.

I'm not sure about the Art style, i mean it's catch-y and all, but I'm just getting tired of seeing the Cartoon-y art style in MMO's, it also gives me that impression that the developers are trying too hard to draw in the teens-to-young adults demographic.

I'm just tired of that design platform and art aesthetic, it's not doing anything new and bold, just more of the same gift wrapping with different pairs of socks inside you know you don't really want, but use anyway to save face, and plus we can't very well walk around without socks.  :(

Looks like a cartoon and feels like a cartoon, so hum yes, lets all go down to the TV in the morning and watch Tom and Jerry. So I do not understand what it is in game developers that they think everyone who plays games is under 15 years of age. Or that we want our characters to look like it came from Flintstones cartoon.  Sorry do not need to hear that they have it hard or it is a hard job to do, got that, understand that, all I am asking is that listen to what folks who play these games want, that is all.  Sorry done ranting now.

Supporting crowdfunding keeps game development focused on the player instead of greedy overlords. The whole crowdfunding movement happened because developers didn't want to be told how to build games to be financially profitable. They want to build games that people actually want to play. Hence the movement away from traditional VC to Crowdfunding.

My experience has been that full loot PvP is a stronger predictor of player behavior (including the maturity of that behavior) than art style. Therefore I can live with the art style, but definitely not full loot PvP.  I went down that road once, and won't go there again.

This is interesting.  I like the cartoon style (I've always liked cartoon style for it's longevity).

Is that world management procedurally generated maps aka torchlight/diablo?  If so, that's a huge + for replay value.

Not sure on full loot PvP, on the positive it creates an emergent gameplay a lot of MMO's are missing these days; on the negative, they tend to bring out the worst of the community and promote "might is right" mob mentality where everyone has a predatory mindset.  The problem with playing a game full of wolves, is they eventually run out of sheep.

Class and skill system look nice too.

Cartoon graphics have better longevity and also less poly count for better performance in a mass pvp environment. The art style maybe cartoonish, but the game will be mature in nature. Todd was the creator of Shadowbane which was a phenomenal FFA pvp game that was unfortunately bug laden and never recovered from some of these technical issues. This appears to be loosely Shadowbane 2 and as such a large contingent of the "old school" Shadowbane and UO guilds have already committed. It will be interesting to see how the less powergaming oriented players fit in, and also the Wizard/Pirate101 fans they have also. All in all it's got a great veteran Dev team in charge and should turn out well, at least for those of us who enjoy full loot FFA pvp.

I believe as of the end of Kickstarter the goals for the other campaigns were met and should be there at launch. I've backed this and Camelot Unchained as I haven't seen anything on the horizon or present for that matter that will give the depth, scale or nostalgia that these two titles will.

Definitely adding this game to my watchlist and going to do some deep reading into the details.

Love the idea of seasons that change the conditions. Love the idea of being able to build and design your own castles and defences (and that PvP might be as much about building as destroying). Love the idea of separate PvE and PvP environments (and needing resources from the PvP campaign to build up the PvE environment). Love the idea of randomly created maps and unique campaign effects so no campaign will ever be the same.

I don't mind cartoon graphics - some of my favourite shows and movies are cartoons, and as already mentioned, it creates less demands on performance. Every class being a completely separate race is an interesting concept and will leave no doubt about recognising what you are up against from a good distance away (while the apparently extensive ability customisation should offer plenty of surprises). I'm a little concerned about how much variety there will be in personal appearance, and the idea of full loot PvP definitely has me wary.

Overall, I very much like what this game is trying to pull off.

On the news front: http://crowfall.com/#/news/final-day

It appears the Crowfall has hit 15K backers and $1.5M, that means...

The proving grounds for Order, Balance, and Chaos. Players join one of three divine Factions and battle for control of the World. Sorry, no "The Shadow" for GvG PvP, YET!

Maybe we could do "God's Reach"?

Sorry for bringing this topic back from the grave but I am really excited about this game. I supported it on kickstarter and have been keeping up with their updates. Compared to the other kickstarter games that get a lot of hype and then fade away this team seems really serious and all the updates has helped me feel connected with them in the game development.

Good games take 3-5 years to go from from funding to a releasable product.  Its not really that they fade away, its just that if they use crowd-source to fund a game, they have to hype the crap out of it, but once it's funded, they have to "go dark" under NDA's and other developmental silence protections.

I'm kind of on the fence about alot of new titles.. I just think we as a community need to break off and make a game for us. Grab the half-life 2 engine and just mod the heck out of it. We could even get crysis for a bit and create smaller maps like and focus them kind gw2 style in the fantasy realm.

The idea behind crowfall looks awesome, I just hope they can pull off what they are wanting to do. EA has burned me from getting too excited about anything in the gaming industry. I've refused to buy an EA games for the last ten years. While I've competed in tournaments for EA games I have not had to purchase software for those titles as my team has done that for me. I just can't support what those guys bring to the table.

If the guys that make crowfall can deliver then I'll let my guard down a bit to them.

This title has the most promise in my eyes, I prefer the artistic look (ala WoW) and the comment about longevity and poly control are relevant for mass pvp environments.  I am doing my best to control my own hype as the past 5+ years of MMO development have been...well, you know.

I too am still looking at this one. However, I do not believe that it is going to meet certain minimum needs for Gaiscioch. First and foremost is the FFA Loot rules that some, or all, of the campaigns will exhibit. I think that this game would be a great place to display the leadership, integrity and honor of the Gaiscioch PvPer's and the family as a whole.

To specifically address the FFA Loot issue, I say that while it is often true that FFA rules do tend draw a certain mentality, it does not HAVE to be so. Elth says, "The problem with playing a game full of wolves, is they eventually run out of sheep." This is very true in a world of just sheep and wolves. To this I will give the response I gave to people in EvE Online:

There are three types people in the world;

There are the Sheep grazing unconcerned,

There are the Shepherds that lead the Sheep,

There are the Sheep Dogs that protect the Sheep,

There are Wolves that prey upon them all!

I am a wolf, what are you?

While this is a little cynical and fairly callus it is also very true in it's limited way. There are more than wolves out there. In EvE I went out of my way to take on the role of a defender, policeman or military guardian. I see no reason why I could not do so again in this game. I even believe that some others in the family might also enjoy doing the same. FFA Looting is not a problem if the game's developers give us the tools need to enforce socially exceptable behaviors. This includes the tools needed to determine and proclaim what is exceptable social behavior is.

@Snazz FFA loot is far from universal, CF will also have RvR rings (0% loot + 3 factions/12 factions, while being very likely to vary even that with more choices).

Speaking of inner rings, the ones with supposed friendly fire and full loot, the % of loot will vary - in fact devs plan to observe and let the game give them feedback about most successful/popular combos.

Edit: By the way, Crowfall is not 2016 - recent info is that open beta happens "this winter". For what it's worth =)

That's four... -_-

FFA PvP games can be exhausting for all involved after a few months.  Sheep will constantly bleat about being the subject of grief and eventually stop playing; Sheep dogs will become exhausted from constantly keeping the wolves at bay and the wolves eventually get bored when they can't kill enough sheep to keep them amused.  They are a great concept but the majority of players just log in to have fun and sheep have a plethora of PvE games out there where they can do it without being harassed by wolves.

Again, Crowfall is not FFA + FL, furthermore it is not even just FFA nor just FL. FFA / FL lovers will have their inner rings (not even that, but just some specific campaigns there) and that's it.

Outer rings will be guild vs guild or factions etc. (say, ESO, GW2, WAR...). Unfortunately, even lots of backers that follow this game "closely" in their own words, like to think and talk of Crowfall exclusively in that "hardcore" way, thus spreading disinformation.

To avoid confusion, this building tool is currently available to pre-alpha 1&2 players. I'm saying this because the current tests are, in general, for anyone with beta 2 ($70) or higher but new features are always first allowed to more expensive test groups, and then they spread to everyone.
