  thought i saw somewhere where it is free to play and a true pay2win game in that you can use real money to buy content, items, equipment etc to help you bypass content or get extra content .

Everquest was my first MMO, so I'm watching this one -- felt a little frustrated how slow it's been coming out, with Landmark instead.

Very excited about EQN.  Every thing at this point is speculation and/or subject to change but I think it's looking to become one of the greatest.  I've had my eye on this one for quite some time. I have my concerns about the PvP content but I can't imagine them trying to release such a large scale mmo in this day and age without having some thing for the pvp'ers to drool over.  But even if the pvp is lacking I would still be very interested and excited about this mmo.  I never got into EQ and EQ2 but I will definitely be on board for this trip.

Lack of PvP is the biggest factor playing against this one. Lack of developer updates is another. This game was announced years ago yet we've not learned anything new about it over the past 2 years.

Best thing that I can suggest, is to find out what information SOE released regarding EQN for the SOE Fan Faire 2014, last August.  I honestly heard nothing, so its quite possible that they're focusing on Landmark for the long term, now.  EQNext may never happen, because Everquest and Everquest 2 are going very strongly right now, they both just released expansions last month.

I've been playing Landmark--basically EQII test waters--for about five months, and while the graphics are stunning and the building amazing, it is sooooo graphics heavy that even without combat or highly-populated servers, there's lag.  There is ALWAYS lag.

It became so frustrating for me that I set the game aside.

In regards to EQ Next, it was announced that next month most of the Landmark team would be moved over to EQ Next (same systems), and development on it would start on a super large scale, and what is added to EQ Next would be ported back to Landmark with a smaller team - not so difficult since it's the same system to a large extent.  Should start to hear a lot more news in 2015 hopefully.

I have played the Everquest games.  I started in EQ1 (was my first MMO) and moved to EQ2 when it launched.  I played EQ2 actively (Daily) until I found Rift and joined Gaiscioch.  I go in spurts, I will still play it for a while and take a break, then play it again.  It is the game I seem to come back to.  I go back to hang with friends.  My point is, I LOVED EQ2 and played it for a LONG time.  I have an attachment to the game. lots of good memories in EQ2.  That being said, the thing about EQN I CANNOT stand (and I can't emphasize " _CANNOT_ " enough) is the graphics.  It looks so cartoon-y.  Just can't play a game with those kind of graphics.  It irritates me, absolutely hate them.  Just my opinion, no offense to those who love it but I highly doubt I will play this game.

With the sale of SOE and the very recent "loss"  of key employees aka corporate restructuring, I really don't see this game happening. It was already entering the realm of vapor ware/ peter molyneux levels of over hype/promise and under deliver. 

I won't lie so much of the game sounded and looked really cool. Much of the stuff I'd look for in an mmo that would interest me was being talked about.

Sadly though this now has all the trapping of a failure to launch title.

Gideon, I see heading in two different directions. First is your direction. Or, I can see it being like Warhammer Online when EA bought Mythic forcing them to push out Warhammer way before it was finished. If EQ next looks like it can be pushed out within a year, I can see them pushing for that. However, judging from the lack of information from EQ Next I feel like there were several years away from any kind of release.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around what has happened by reading anything I can dig up, I've been out of touch with things for a bit, so trying to catch up on exactly what was sold to who, what the new owners plan to do with their acquisitions... etc.  Honestly, guessing at this point is ... well, just guessing.

It looks like the new owners want to focus on multi-platform console games for the immediate future (which SOE was unable to do), so ... yea, its just too tough to guess right now.  I do know that DCUO has been making a resurgence on the PSN, so ... its possible that EQN might be re-envisioned as a multi-platform console game.

I dunno.  IMO Microsoft is still a wild-card for x-platform MMOs, because they hate to share game servers with other console's manufax.  They claim security concerns for their service, which is partially true, but M$ loves their Xbox exclusives.

As a former tech employee,  we have been talking about the status of Sony the past year or so. With the elimination of their computing division a couple of years ago and now the layoff of the EQ lead makes me wonder if they (daybreak gaming) will exit the pc gaming arena all together.

I'm not so sure that the title is scrapped. Likely the radio silence is due to the sale which has been in the works for quite some time. The real shock is how they were able to keep it under wraps as well as they did. Conversely, the loss of the project lead isn't catastrophic but it is impactful - maybe good, maybe bad.  I wasn't sold on the content I had access to at any rate.

They did just break off into their own company, so we may have to wait a bit till things get settled down. 

Being on board for Landmark, from discussions, they tested the new system to run it in Landmark to port directly over into EQNext. Which is why we are probably seeing the shift into EQNext from there, they've done their work on Landmark now to take what they have learned and use it to improve EQNext.

I sure hope the new company has different policies about talking to game communities. SOE was impossible  to work with. All I ever got was talk to our pr company, PR company just told me they can add us to their mailing list to get their newsletter but can't talk about anything. have not been impressed so far. This is one of the only companies I've ever worked with that is absolutely  impossible to work with. here's  hopping that this changes.

Yea, SOE was difficult for me to get a foot in with, too, I never managed to.  Ironically, I knew Brad McQuaid from Sojourn MUD, where we (bunch of us) used to chat about how graphical 3D MUDs (aka today's MMOGs) were our Holy Grail of gaming.  When we heard about Everquest (the first real 3D MMO), we dumped our text MUDs and never looked back.  Also, some of SOE's staff were members of Waelwulfas during SWG, so yea, corporations running games...  ugh.

On one hand, its sad to see SOE sunset, but on the other, I feel that it needed to happen, because things got too corporate with all SOE games.  IMO, when a game goes corporate, it just loses something with its community, because decisions become less about what players want and more about what shareholders want.  Accountants running games is a bad thing for everyone.

Anyway, I'm sure that we'll know more come summer-time, but right now, I don't believe that development for Landmark+EQNext will be continued.  Honestly, I'm not really sure it should, I was just never impressed by what little they actually told us.

Bill Murphy talked about the layoffs in his last weekly news update on MMORPG.com.  The talk is that all of those laid off have been reassuring everyone that EQ Next and Landmark were okay and would be continued.  However, I'd have to believe that their severance packages probably included an NDA and "talk nice" clause.

 

With that said, I'd be really surprised if EQ Next, as it has been portrayed by SOE to date, will ever hit the market.  I'm thinking it will be a watered down version and cross-platform like Zenimax is doing with ESO.  The ambitious title would only play well on a PC otherwise. 

 

Hey Cyrexae, is EQ2 still ticking?  I went from EQ to DAOC and never really blinked when EQ2 came out.  Does it hold up?

@James, they just released an expac back a few months ago.  I have played it all of...you guessed it ... one time.   A friend of mine wanted to hang out and so I bought it and we hit some of the new instances.  It was fun.  But, honestly, that was cause of who I was grouping with.  He makes the most boring stuff fun and generally speaking I can play my defiler with one hand tied behind my back and my eyes closed (and he is an awesome tank). 

Back in the day EQ2 was awesome.  But it has died off so much.  There are still die hard fans, but it just lost something when it went F2P.  It was fading even before that. Thing is, I am saying all of this as someone who had played the game for YEARS (basically since launch).  If you are new to it, it might well be really great for you.  They don't really have dynamic content though (unless there is something new in the game that I haven't heard about it).    The dynamic content is what pulled me to Rift and away from EQ2 initially (that and character customization). 

Maybe I need to go roll new lvl 1 toons and try to find my love of the game again ;) I will think about it.  Right now I am having some fun in GW2 working on my Mesmer though (thanks to Fog showing us how it is done :)  ).   If you do wanna check it out and roll up on Butcherblock server, let me know (send a PM here with your toons name/lvl/class and I will work on getting all the stuff together for you).  Especially if you play a caster, I can hook you up with some gear, upgrades, and plat.  Not like it is doing much just sitting in my bank. 

 

Sorry I am not much help,  I struggle to get excited about EQ2, but it was always about the guild I was in.  Being close like a family, knowing people and it going from being in game, to meeting in person.  A lot of those people have left the game.  So, when I do play nowadays it is to stop in and hang out with one of them when they log in.

@fog, have you interacted with the new company at all?

 

also, as someone who has played quite a bit of the landmark side of the fence, as of the last time i spent time on it it was working really well. which i always felt was pointing to a great future for eqn which would build on top of that.

also, who is it that they booted?  is david georgeson (great presenter, 2nd person in first vid), and other key development people still with them?  i couldn't get a feel for specifically who they lost.

It looks like they're having Livestreams and what not, so despite the silence (as in newsletters, promo emails) we can still keep an eye on this.  I used to get a ton of promo mails from SOE, but since the sale, Daybreak has been pretty quiet, even though I did sign up for their new emails.

I just started getting promo mail from Daybreak again, so hopefully it was a hiatus while they got things straighted out. 

Looking on the site for EQ-Next it looks like its going to be Landmark with the EQ plotlines added in. I went back after taking a few months off of Landmark due to bugs and had the hardest time realizing you now need combat for crafting, and took forever to find basic sword ect.

I thought this sounded interesting and was looking forward to giving it a try - however if it is pay2win, I won't even bother to give it a look. I'd never play any game that rewards you based on your income rather than the time and effort you invest.

heh yea, it was funny that, not long after I posted that, I got a promo email titled "WTF is Happening at Daybreak?‏

It is a strange world in which we chose to live...

At first announcement I was sort of excited since EQ was my first MMO and I loved it - it hooked me into the MMOs as a gaming genre. 

After more info was released about EQN I actually became less excited as I believed it was too ambitious and many things would end up watered down to create this completely destructible world - especially graphics.

Then many in the family began commenting on it and I thought - "Well - maybe it will be good".

Things changed again as Sony was going through all their internal issues and problems and I actually thought the game might get scrubbed all together or postponed a long time until they worked out the catastrophe that befell them.

Finally (at least for now) the game has been sold and I'm back to the "I'm not sure I care anymore."  There is only so long I can follow a game that is going down what is obviously a very bumpy road of development.  I followed one game for a couple of years - from inception down just such a bumpy road.  Gave valuable input (well, at least in my mind) on the forums as one of the first to sign up, was invited to be one of the first 50 Beta Testers, tested for around 6 months, and upon logging in one day to test found the world, the forums, all of it shut down - no notice.  They finally posted a notice that the site was off-line and I eventually read an article where the game had been sold.  It later came out as an app game for smart phones and tablets. 

The moral of my story... if a game is on a path with too many twists and turns, too many dips and bumps, and then a cattle guard; I get a little nauseous and find a different path.  This game just hit the cattle guard phase.

Well, its not unusual to see a game in development over the course of 8-10 years.  With the current economy and heavy saturation of the MMO market, these games have to get public exposure early in their development, in order to attract and/or appease investors with interest and hype from the gaming community.

Its still early, so we'll see what Daybreak decides to do, but that will depend a lot on the level of continued interest of the gaming community.  (opinion: they need to start the hype back up now, or they're going to be unable to regain any momentum)

As a long time fan of the EQ series, I'm on board for EQN. It will likely be my next fantasy MMO.

My condolences to any family folk who were employees that were affected by this.  I've been on projects that had their plug pulled, it sucks and you have my sympathies.

Daybreak was no better and for the same reasons. I wish I still had the pieces I wrote about Landmark and Next but  it seems they have mysteriously disappeared from their forums. That's never happened with them before.... (rolls eyes so hard she almost falls out of her chair).

They took a bunch of money (mine along with) and basically squandered it by arrogance and a refusal to listen to their customers. (Sadly, also not unusual.)

McQuaid's off trying to remake EQ1 (that time has passed, frankly), Smedley has sailed off on his pretty, shiny, golden parachute, and who knows what the Russian investment management firm that bought them will do now. If they can eek out revenue of any sort on the remaining IP, they will, else I suspect they'll go the way of so many others (i.e., piece meal sales of assets, art, and riggings, etc).

Ah well. Change is inevitable and comes the fastest to the companies who refuse to acknowledge it at all.

If it ain't fixed, break it until it is.
