I'm still deciding on how I feel about this. It is pretty vacant in the leveling zones, but chat is going to be horrible...
Haham I knew it was going to happen, it is good for me because I cannot pay the subscription but I would like to keep playing it.
Hmm, i am surprised, but not? by this. i thought they were doing well, but i guess not. =( i'm always sad to see a decent game go F2P.
Well in the good news colum im looking at a very rough june financially so if it goes free 2 play thats 15 bucks more to feed my kiddoe with :)
I don't always see going F2P as a bad thing, for LOTRO going F2P improved the game and kept it alive.
For me it is good news. Once my year requirement was met from getting storm legion free, I was going to have to quit my subscription due to budget but now I can still play some.
I have mixed feelings on this
Sad to see RIFT go the F2P since it shows how much the P2P model has been struggling the past few years (not really just RIFT doing this but all the other MMOs over the past few years as well). I still have mixed feelings on this but I'm sure it will help RIFT in the long run stay around.
Good news and bad news for me. Good news is I can play more than just up to 20. Bad news is there is a good chance the quality of Rift could go down quite a lot. Their model seems good, and the fact that you can get their cash shop currency with in-game currency is good. But the drawback is the price is set by the players. And I can see 1 credit being equal to 1k platinum, or some other extreme amount. We will see.
Its a double edge sword. You get some riff raff but you also get some really good people who wanna try the game and may stay. I've shelved Rift forwhile and have only been playing GW2 casually doing the dailies/monthies and some wvw and content.
With Rift going F2P, that appears to leave WoW as the only major subscription-based MMO that I'm aware of... I don't know how I feel about it, but I suppose it works.... We'll see.
Most MMOs are F2P or B2P nowdays, don't see this being a bad thing at all. Might even play it some more.
I'm looking forward to the new F2P feature.
It will be interesting as I have multiple accounts. (I used to multi-box). On my main I'm subscribed to an annual account. So... I'm going to have to consider my options. I wonder about the rest of the family. Nuuli
I'm excited...i like rift i just don't wanna pay the sub fee...its worth it..i just cant do it at times. now i dunno whats gonna take up my time Rift or gw2 :P this would be the only f2p game that has decent endgame raids wouldn't it and it sounds like you really don't have to pay for anything
It will Leave WoW, Asheron's Call, Ultima Online? (Don't remember them going free), Final Fantasy 14 2.0 (later this summer) I think DAoC is still a pay system. FFXI is still a pay system as well.
On further looking, It looks like Archeage is and I forgot Eve Online, Lineage is still Pay to play as well. Since Asherons Call 2 re-opened you have to have a valid AC account so I guess that would be considered pay to play also.

I for one will not be spending any more time in Rift. As it is I am having a TON of fun in Neverwinter, and after reading the forum posting and AMA on reddit by the devs, I've pretty much lost respect and trust with the development team.
Things that we have been told for years are impossible for one reason or another are now suddenly possible, but only thru the cash shop. Things removed from the game that were supposed to be no longer available (give you that elite feeling knowing "Hey I got this, and its not here anymore!) will now be available in the cash shop. Knowing this has been in the works for over a year, and yet in that time frame being told "F2P is not coming in the foreseeable future," as well as Trion setting up and pushing year long subs, and the rapid decline in the dev's community involvement (both for fun and when it comes to managing the community) has contributed to this decision.
If Trion was unwilling to deal with griefers, exploiters, bots, blatant ToS violating trolls, and people that continually harassed others back when everyone had to pay a monthly sub to play, I do not imagine them suddenly stepping up the enforcement once there is a massive influx of F2P players who have nothing invested in the game.
Simpy put, Rift and Trion are not the game and development company I fell in love with during closed beta. And at this point, I do not feel like supporting the company any longer. My issue is not with F2P games, or the F2P model. My issue is simply I have no faith in Trion anymore. I fully believed what they were telling the community, and defended them at every turn, only to find out they were full of it and doing one thing while telling us another. I feel like I have been burned one time too many.
I'll be in both Neverwinter and GW2 depending on which game I feel like playing at the time, waiting for ESO.
I'll pop in to Rift here and there just to check things out, however I will not be hosting events or signing up for events. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised by what F2P can do for the game, or maybe my fears and issues will be justified. Only time will tell.

I feel mixed too. But I'm committed until October with an annual sub. So ready or not! Here I am!
As far as developers... Never say Never! Money dictates the future of any for profit company. Even subscribers. ;)
I also have mixed feelings about it. I wonder if this means that Defiance was a flop (although the SyFy channel renewed for a second season already).
Good to know. I might think about rezzing my cute elf and running around on my shiny ponie again. hmm...
I think that Defiance, the show, can succeed whereas the game may not. I'm personally enjoying the show, but haven't even look into the game.
I logged in and had a look around Rift today. Even though I didn't get Storm Legion, it was pretty quick to patch up to "playable" (after which it continues to download in the background). I'm not sure if we'll get back into playing it or not, but hey, it's free to try and see all the changes. Sooooo many new things since last fall.
Loving the F2p.. missing my Gaiscioch family
I also miss the family we had in Rift when it was a current chapter. But there are still family playing. If you /join tuatha you can find them.
I haven't been playing Rift much lately for two reasons. First, that "burning orb in the sky" has been out recently and I feel compelled to go outside. :O
Second, as a prepaid subcriber I felt a bit miffed at my subscription money being exchanged for a currency that I personally consider worthless without being given an option to have it refunded. Perhaps with a little time, the sting will pass and I will be back in game more often. :)
