I know most of you are very tech savvy but for those that are not or know senior citizens I am going to tell this story any way :)

So my mothers wanted to reduce her bill. It was 163$ a month. They sent her a hd receiver that some tv's already have in and or you can buy at wall mart for 20$.

They reduced her bill to 93$ lmao. So they are actively expecting her to pay 45$ a month or so for something she can buy for 20$.

So I called them, you must ask for the Loyalty department. Say the words I think what you are doing is criminal. I am can get one of these boxes for 20$. I can get internet and cable from (insert competitors name here) Any will do. For this price (I just looked up a package from Direct tv) I am going to cancel your service in a few days if you do not make this right. The agent then will search the net and see yes you can get it for that price and they will match it. Its there job to not let any one leave for any reason if possible.

There reply was ok your bill is now 63$ a month, Still asking you to pay 15$ a month for something you can buy at wallmart that will do the same thing but hey.

We than asked what would it be to keep the contur box. 93$ a month and they gave her premium stuff for free for two years.

So one phone call using the right buzzwords and threatening to leave will always get your parents bills to a more appropriate level.  I am going to put all this in the local retirement community news letter. I am willing to be so many of the elderly around me are un aware of this business practice.

Very unfortunate but a truth of most of the service providers for cable, cell phones, and other home services. I can't think of a single home service company that I've contacted that hasn't puffed their bills up and been more than ready to severely reduce the bill for people who are leaving. It shows you what sort of business is being run. Makes me think about going to traffic court with a friend of mine in high school and watching the judge immediately cut everyone's fine by 50% just for showing up and pleading guilty.

Glad you're putting this into the local retirement community newsletter. I worked for a major retirement home company for a while several years ago and that community is very much taken advantage of in every way. Kudos to you!

Having worked in IT/Telecom I know how to drive most company's nuts about their service and pricing. Of course, I live in a rural area and I have ONE choice to get the service I do have. Of course, that company has heard a lot from me to get them to fix things and get fiber in our area. I could even tell them the wiring scheme they had and even knew what the size of the fiber backbone they put in for those that stayed on DSL. The sad thing is I had to tell my neighbors you had to call to get fiber in the house. They would not do it unless you called. On a good note, I live 13 miles from my service provider in an area where everyone gets lost but have decent fiber, cable and phone. :) It would be cheaper if there were competitors, but again I live in the boonies so you have to take your pros with your cons.

Definitely call out any company that you think is pulling a fast one with overcharging or anything else. Have your facts lined up and it usually works out. And if you go shopping at places that claim to match the lowest price in the area be sure to have the proof. I've done that before, too. It's kind of like bartering, an art I feel most Americans have no clue how to do.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D
