Wizardry Online

Anyone else playing this interestingly hard Free to play SoE MMO?

Appearantly (the longer you play the game and more often you die) You have the possibility of losing your characters forever. On top of that PvP can kinda run rampant since there is no actual PvP server with players being able to loot your corpses when you do die (your starting equipment is not lootable)

Anyone who remembers the old original games might get a kick out of this title as it brings back the fear of death to gaming heheh

Oh yeah and when you do die, you turn into a ghost and have to run from your body back to a statue to res, but, there is an evil demon ghost character that chases you and if it catches you, drags you bag to your body and yoiu get to start your undead trek over again

I tried it out a few months ago but couldn't really get into it. I loved the idea that there was a chance of permanently losing your character and that it was more about enjoying a tough journey rather than racing to endgame. It may have improved since I played it last but my main reasons for not continuing were because of the clunky animations and combat. The colour palette and art just felt outdated. The other downside that kept me away from it was their association with SOE. I'm not a fan of SOE.

Tried it right after it came out on Steam, but as previously said, the animations were very clunky and dated...movement wasn't intuitive and combat just seemed clunky(again)...

I Beta tested this game. Well, no, not really, because I couldn't stand to play the game long enough to "test" it. It was like... ugh, the 90's called and want their graphics engine back. I seriously gave it as much rope as I could, but it eventually hung itself. I don't know what SOE was thinking when they acquired this game and decided to resurrect it. If I recall correctly, it was a failed game that SOE bought and tried to re-make. I think we know why it failed the first time. >_> I mean I really hate to neg on a new game trying to make it in this over-saturated MMO market, but ... seriously SOE?

One thing that I never truly understood with Wizardry online. When did they go anime? The Wizardry games I remember were similar to Ultima and Bards' Tale. I do wonder how old the actual game was before SOE acquired it though, it did seem more akin to something from 2003 era, not 2013. I would love to play an MMO with looting, permadeath where reaching level cap is the ultimate achievement, you retire and start a namesake. Unfortunately nobody wants to put money behind it and you end up with poor quality games that give challenging games a bad name. Whenever I think of games with permadeath I think of Table top D&D modules like Tomb of Horrors or White Plume Mountain. I don't know about anyone else, but when I first played D&D, dying happened. You took it on the chin, re-rolled a new character with a new concept and the Dungeon Master weaved the new guy into the story. I would love to see an MMO do this.

I tried it, but same issues... combat was clunky. I didn't mind the animations so much, but combat didn't work out so well I thought.

Wizardry didn't go anime per se. Actually the game gives almost the perfect feel of the originals to me, just with graphics. I grew up on the wizardry series as well (along with FF, Elder scrolls and Ultima hehe) I've played every Wizardry title there was. The graphics from Wizardry remind me more of Final Fantasy XI, which works for me heheh I love the spontaneous cutscenes that pop up. So I guess some people game issue with the graphics.. everyone does have their own tastes hehehe But, it could be sooo much worse... Think Everquest or even Asheron's Call. In my opinion, I disagree that it is a poor quality game. but that's just me ;)
