WvW Workshop

Greetings Friends and Family,

I'm posting here to guage interest in a WvW workshop covering strategy, group dynamics, class roles, builds, and community integration.

Background

We are blessed to reside on a very dynamic and active server with respect to WvW. We have many large and very organized guilds that represent us on the battlefield every day, backed by scores of smaller guilds and individuals, all working together effectively. This didn't get built overnight but the results speak for themselves. Sanctum of Rall has moved from a low of 17th all the way to 1st on the WvW ladder, setting two GW2 records along the way - most ranks gained (next closest server moved up 10 ranks) and the only server to never drop down a tier. Best of all, we did it our way, not the standard way of paying large sums of gold to entice mercenary guilds to come fight for us. Guilds that eventually leave when the going gets rough.

I've purposefully been away from the family for over two months now. My goal was to WvW heavily and learn from the leaders of the SoR WvW community, then bring that knowledge back to the GSCH and Tuatha family. I've run extensively with TW, FEAR, CHOO, and TSYM. I've also logged many hours with some of our Euro and Sea guilds such as SAHP, LUN, and more recently IRON. Each have slightly different approaches and I've tried to learn from them all. Along the way I've gained 80+ WvW rank levels, almost 10,000 WvW badges, and have tallied just under 30,000 WvW kills as a front line melee Guardian.

[EDIT: I thought it would go without saying in this family but let me clarify why I listed my accomplishments. It's not to "epeen my street cred" or any such nonesense but instead it's to say this... I'm not a great player. I'm not even a good player. I consider myself *maybe* a hair above average and that's on a good day. My point is that I was able to accomplish all of the above because I became part of a very good team. I'll take a solid team of average players any day over a handfull of super stars. I am however, a very observant player and I try to learn as much as I can from every engagement. All that I've learned in the last 4+ months of daily WvW is what I'm willing to help bring to GSCH, not because I feel our current commanders are lacking; rather, to bring a different perspective and experience from the field. Ideas and concepts that have proven themselves in the crucible of battle.]

Intended Audience

This workshop is intended for anyone interested in learning more about WvW. All are welcome and no prior WvW experience is necessary as I intend to start with the basics and work all the way through to expert tactics.

Goals

The primary goal is to further build SoR's WvW competency and remain #1 for as long as we can. This will possibly be two-fold, with the first being to spread knowledge through workshops. Secondly, if there is enough interest and commitment, build a GSCH/Tuatha WvW force that ties in effecively with the SoR WvW community.

Scaling Curriculum

The heart of the project consists of four core workshops:

  • WvW mechanics and strategy
  • Classes, roles, and group integration
  • Battlefield movement
  • Combat tactics and scale

In an effort to spur increased interest and get more people involved, I'm introducing a "kickstarter" style offering (LOL!). The more people that attend the more we can plan on achieveing.

  • <5 people - Training Postponed
    • Due to lack of interest, the workshops will be delayed until later in the summer.
  • 5-9 people - Basic Training
    • Basic training includes the core workshops followed by basic field excercises and minimal active WvW participation.
  • 10-14 people - Intermediate Training
    • Intermediate training includes the core workshops along with specialized workshops for classes and roles, followed by expanded field excercises and multiple sessions of active participation in WvW.
  • 15-19 people - Advanced Training
    • Advanced training includes the core workshops along with specialized workshops for classes, roles, effective communication, and force integration, followed by advanced field excercises and multiple sessions of active participation in WvW. After advanced training is complete a dedicated GSCH/Tuatha WvW force will be assembled to participate in weekly WvW events, excluding reset nights.
  • >19 people - Expert training
    • Expert training includes the core workshops along with specialized workshops for classes, roles, effective communication, and force integration. "Guest" expert instructors will be brought in from the SoR WvW community to run the individual class workshops. The specialized workshops will progress over a period of several weeks, after which we'll hold greatly expanded field excercises and active participation in WvW with some of the leading SoR guilds. After completion of the expert training course, a dedicated GSCH/Tuatha WvW force will be assembled to participate in weekly WvW events, including reset nights.

Proposed Schedule

Tuesday through Thursday nights present the best opportunities for our group to have access to the WvW battlegrounds for workshops. As for me personally, Friday and Saturday nights I participate in WvW reset groups, so I'll be unavailable on those nights for workshops. Furthermore, I am married and my wife and I have an 18 month old son. My wife works full time and I run a small business (which luckily means my hours are a bit fluid). I pick my son up from daycare every evening at 5:30pm eastern, after which I prepare dinner. After our meal the wife and I spend time with the boy before bathing and getting him to bed by 8:00pm. This is valuable family time that I do not skip! I am usually in game by 8:45pm - 9:00pm eastern (5:45pm - 6:00pm server).

With that in mind, the proposed schedule for workshops will be Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evenings starting at 9:00pm eastern (6:00pm server). Being that Fog usually runs epic creature hunts on Thursdays, and the Great Tyrian Adventures on Tuesdays, let's shoot for Wednesday nights starting at 9:00pm easter (6:00pm server).

The schedule for the core workshops has been set for the four Wednesday's of June 2013. Please check the guild calendar for times. We will be using Raidcall 5012, WvW Squad 1 channel.

Workshop Notes

WvW mechanics and strategy - The first workshop took place on June 5th during which we covered the WvW scoring and supply systems as well as tips and tricks.

  • For the scoring discussion, we covered...
    • WvW is a big game of capture and hold - supply camps, towers, keeps, castle and lord buff timers
    • Potential Point (PPT) value - what it means
    • Clock ticks - when PPT is added to the cumulative score
    • Strategies for maximizing PPT at ticks
  • For the supply system discussion, we covered...
    • What is supply and how is it used
    • How and where supply is generated
    • How supply is distributed to structures
    • Supply acquisition, etiquette, and best practices
    • Strategy for yak defending/slaying
    • Supply traps - how to buy, use, and get the most out of
  • Since we had some time remaining, we also covered some pro tips and tricks for WvW

Classes, roles, and group integration - The second workshop took place on June 12th but our normally scheduled program was interrupted by our group being called in to action. We did cover a few points about classes, roles, and builds.

  • For class roles we first discussed the organization of a team
    • Groups are formed based on roles within the team
    • Front line / back line team organization, ideally with each having a commander to follow
    • Front line is compromised of defensively built Guardians and Warriors - a.k.a. "the melee train"
    • Back line is compromised of all casters, ranged, and support
    • Some teams, such as FEAR, break it down further into a front, mid, and back line
  • For builds we briefly discussed...
    •  The concept of "selfish" v.s. "selfless" builds
    • "Selfish", or the "power" build is a build in which traits/gear/utilities are chosen to enhance performance of the individual in small group combat or solo play
    • "Selfless", or the "synergy" build is a build in which traits/gear/utilities are chosen to enhance performance of the team in large scale combat situations
    • There is a valid place for both builds but we'll be focusing on synergy builds in our upcoming class workshops

heck yeah, count me in please:) I love learning about how to be more effective out there in world vs world. Thanks for offering. I don't run with anyone besides GSCH unless I am out there just soloing so it would be nice to hear strategies and other tactics, I think this would be great for us all.

You will need someone to res... I guess I better show up! Friday's seem fairly light (since the COF and Fractal groups has slipped away) on the calendar prior to the Midnight Club.

Friday's are light on WvW because that is reset time and it has very long queues and a better team fielded by our enemies. This makes family events difficult because we both tend to get a lot of interested members and the action is more constant thus making it harder for our family commanders to both lead and teach at the same time. Friday would not a good day to hold WvW learning experiences.

I have a 15 week old daughter, so I have to play pretty casually and be prepared to step away from the computer at any moment. That being said, I am interested in being a more effective player when I am able to jump in. I have never really enjoyed PvP in other games, but I find WvW to be so different, with so many choices of things to do. I have enjoyed the few times I have played it. So, if you are willing to teach someone like me, I would be interested in participating in some workshops. I am a stay-at-home mom so I have some flexibility in time, but I am East Coast so anything running later than 9 pm server time is really pushing it for me. (Not that you should schedule around me...just putting it out there since you asked.)

Signal, I attended your workshop last night and it was very informative to say the least! A lot of things were explained that I was not aware of, including how the points are given out for various tasks and how supplies play an intricate role of win/loose scenario. I am looking forward to your next ones. Keep up the great work as it only makes us stronger! ...and for those people who really never tried WvW, or who have mixed feelings about it, come on by, and try it out!

Regarding your edit in the OP: I was not referring to you in my thread, since you pretty much quoted exactly what I said, so I assume that's in response to me. Everyone has their own accomplishments that they worked hard for and I'm never going to take that away from anyone. I just said it out of matter of fact, because that's just me. My apologies if you felt it was directed at you, it was not. quick edit: For folks that aren't used to me, know that I generalize a LOT. I'm usually thinking about in game chat, other forums, other games, articles, tweets, facebook posts, etc. when I write posts. I'll always include names when I direct something towards someone.

Understood and thank you. My edit remark was not necessarily a response to any one post or comment. It was simply an explanation to clear up any possible misconceptions. In hindsight I realized that my comment regarding my accomplishments could have come across as bragadocious and while one would like to believe that the benefit of the doubt would be given, I try to take nothing for granted.

Signal, could you possibly post a review of what you went over during the week? I'd love to be able to participate in all of them, but my work schedule is unpredictable and I can't always make it. Especially this week, since it's the battlefield mobility and how you mentioned it's essential. Or, maybe you could do another event of it, if possible, on another day? That'd be cool too.

New member here, this sounds great! Funny story. I played on Tarnished Coast until a couple of days ago, when I came to SoR to join Aemrys, who is a friend. She attended last week's workshop and it was her first real foray into WvW to my knowledge. That same night, I was in WvW on the SoR map and was in a smaller TC zerg (smaller being less than 60 by TC standards) hitting Hills. Suddenly everyone started dying around me when SoR's defenders took to the walls, and I believe I was the last to die. As I respawned at garrison I started chatting with Aemrys and asked what she was doing. She said she was attending a WvW workshop for beginners, but that they had cut it short to defend a keep being attacked. Feeling a chill go down my spine, I asked her what map and keep she was defending...sure enough, it was the same one I helped zerg and got wasted at. I remember seeing some GSCH tags there, too...was my first experience with you all, lol!

Ragmar, That's a good idea. I do post outlined reviews of each workshop at the bottom of the original post, usually the day after the event. I also post the event for people to claim on the following day. Unfortunately, for me to include more details about what we covered the post would quickly become a wall of text that would go for ten pages. :-P That said, I do plan on running the four core workshops again in the near future, likely at a different time for those who can't make the evening times. I can even hold them in the afternoons if we have enough interested in that time slot. In all likelihood they'll be repeated several times over the summer and in to the fall. Since I've been asked a few times I'd like to remind everyone that the four core workshops are "101" level events and are only worth 10 fellowship points. This remains the case even if we go out into active WvW like we did last week.

So, for our third WvW Workshop we zoned in to our home borderland and were immediately thrown in to the fight again. We spent the majority of the evening defending Hills and its surrounding territory (supply camps, sentry points, and yak routes) while TW fought the BG/JQ zergs. By around midnight all of the TW commanders had logged and our force was the only organized force remainig for the entire borderland. After getting everyone left in the zone to form on us, we proceeded to defend Hills, Longview, and Garrison againt determined BG assaults. They never took a single keep from us! We fought them to a stalemate on the field, leaving them holed up in thier corner of the map around Bay while we held the rest of the map. We definitely won the PPT fight for SoR that night!

Every single GSCH member fought very well. I'd like to point out in particular Dreamtrip for the hours he spent scouting and defending Hills, being my eyes there and helping us thwart several sieges of that keep. Again, everyone else did extremely well also but scouting is often a thankless (and unprofitable) chore. You have my gratitude Sir! Overall, GSCH made my job easy that night and I thank you all. That last push we made against the open-field trebs that BG set up on Longview was EPIC! We were outnumbered yet we destroyed their three trebs and wiped their zerg! That was the end of BG for the night. They sat inside Bay until we logged.

That said, we covered almost nothing that I wanted to cover regarding the course material for the Workshop! So, for the last Workshop we will NOT be heading in to the WvW battleground. We will be discussing class roles within a dedicated force, how the force is organized, and how to move and fight as a unit. Don't miss this final WvW Workshop. I've had a blast putting these on!

One last note. Since I'm planning on having a guest speaker for the last Workshop, we'll be meeting on the SoR TeamSpeak server. Indo is going to make a GSCH channel for us and that's where we'll be gathering. The server address is ts.zerodrama.org and you'll need to download the TeamSpeak 3 client from TeamSpeak.com?

Just an update for everyone. This week's WvW Workshop covering class roles within an organized force is being postponed due to today's patch and all the changes to the WvW meta that it brings. Over the next week or two we will be experimenting with the skill changes and new conditions that Anet is introducing. This may change the way we recommend certain classes be utilized in a group.

Instead, we'll go over some of the things we should have covered last week, including movement and engaging as a group. We will be meeting in the standard Raidcall channel, WvW Squad 1 at the regular time.

Tonight's WvW Workshop went extremely well. We started by going over the workshop material from the previous week then worked with TW to keep the BG/JQ zergs off of Bay. As a special "THANK YOU" to those who attended this final, scheduled workshop, I have gone ahead and posted our accomplishments for the night for full fellowship credit.

As mentioned during the event, if we get enough people interested in running together for this upcoming reset night (Fri the 28th), I will tag up and lead. For anyone interested, we'll meet on the SoR TeamSpeak server (ts.zerodrama.org) at 4:45pm server time (7:45pm EST) and attend the SoR server meeting prior to the match reset.

Coming soon Xanissary! I'm going through a bit of a hectic period right now with work but once it settles down I'm going to schedule additional workshops. I also have some homework to do with the latest changes to classes and how they're influencing WvW. Plus some big changes coming down the pipeline that will greatly change WvW as we know it. If we prepare in advance for them it can give us a nice advantage over the competition. I've heard some rumors and hearsay about some of what's being proposed, including new WvW battlegrounds that will favor smaller squads over zergs, but nothing concrete yet.

It sounds like WvW is going to remain an exciting, ever evolving place to be for quite some time!

Thanks signal I look forward to tonight's workshop and any advice you can give us on commanding. I have been learning a lot out there on the field but I have so much more to learn. I actually had a TW commander pm me the other day very kindly and give me a few tips, which was very welcome. The more things we can learn as commanders, the more weapons we have in our arsenal:)
