In the run up to the end of free world transfers we saw large population changes as people settled in to their home servers. This means that the WvW teams being fielded by many of the worlds are now dramatically different. In recognition of this fact, and in light of the increased population stability that comes with paid transfers, we feel that this would be a good time to reset the ratings of all the servers. A reset at this point will allow the rating & ranking system to more quickly and correctly rate these (effectively) new WvW teams.

Here’s how the reset will work:

1) We’ll let the current matchup play out. Since free transfers were available during the first part of this matchup we don’t want it to count towards the new ratings.
2) When the matchup rolls over on Friday, February 1st we’ll post the final ratings & rankings. The new ordering will determine the groupings for the next matchup as usual.
3) After the new matchup has started on February 1st we’ll reset all the ratings (and deviation & volatility) behind the scenes.

Because every world will have reset ratings the system will treat the February 1st matchup as the first matchup and will calculate the ratings accordingly. The new ratings will then be calculated normally in the way that you’re already familiar with. We expect several weeks of volatility while the ratings settle down but we believe that it will ultimately yield a more correct result more quickly than letting the current ratings persist. That also means that the coming month or two will be a fantastic time to fight for your world’s place in the rankings!

Additionally, we’re taking advantage of the reset to revisit some of the math behind the ratings. I’ll have more to post on that once we’ve crunched some numbers and made some decisions.

Well... this should be very interesting. As it stands, if they did the resets today the top three tiers would be as follows... - Tier 1: Jade Quarry / Sanctum of Rall / Sea of Sorrows - Tier 2: Blackgate / Tarnished Coast / Fort Aspenwood - Tier 3: Kaineng / Maguuma / Dragonbrand So, I'm curious where everything will fall once they reset the rating system behind the scenes. Should definitely shake up the top two tiers for sure, possibly the third as well.

They should have announced this before they stopped free transfers today. I'm sure some of those servers would have evened out a bit more. Oh well.

Agreed, Sekker. I am hoping in a way that we go so bad that people may jump ship. I know, I know, I am being too wishful since they would only jump ship to lower pop servers (although I don't know how bad the price is to go to higher pop) if they knew they had a hope for getting higher in the tiers. I'm happy though we're starting afresh again, I just wish we could have got rid of the cowards who fled from their losing server to ours.

I'd like a return to the random server matching, with a scoring ladder system that better rewards the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place servers in each matchup. I actually have my system proposal already designed and I keep meaning to send it to ArenaNet, but I've procrastinated on it, because I'm not really sure how to get it to their attention. I imagine I can write it in Notepad and paste it into a Bug Report. >.> I think they'd really like it, since it addresses some of the major shortcomings and player complaints of the current scoring system.

You are right Sek - does seem to be a better system - just not sure if Bug Report will get the right person's attention. But you might try sending it to them several different ways - maybe someone will eventually listen. But... GW2 will always be a work in progress so hopefully changes like you propose will make it in someday.

I agree with you too Sek. It would be fix the whole server jumping issue if we had a better scoring system. I'm curiously waiting for ANet to bring the article about explaining the system more. I would assume though if you were to send it, see if there is an email or perhaps make it into a google doc (or similar) and PM someone on the official forum with the link?

I thought of the official forums or PMs, but there's generally so much noise on public forums, that things get easily lost, especially PMs. I'm not looking at getting it noticed by generating public interest, because that's a long process and a gamble that can backfire, especially if the trolls are feeling frisky and are hungry for fresh threads to sabotage. Bug report... well that depends on who is responsible for triaging the incoming reports. That was one of my primary jobs when I worked for Microsoft, so I have an idea of how that might work in other companies. I could always just type it up, print it out, and drive it down, since I live ~8 miles from their office, but my water pump is going out, so I'm afraid to drive any further than just down the street to the store. That could be a blessing, because I might get escorted out of their building and banned, if I did do that, LOL. Personally, I'm just hoping that the right "eyes" will happen across this thread, and someone might make a helpful post about a method of Feedback submittable that they "heard" about somewhere. A lot of games have a method like that, but if ArenaNet does, I can't seem to find it. o_o
