[Item Skin] One of my greatest regrets! (So you can watch out for it too...)

It pretty much comes down to the item skins you get through personal story quests, I was playing as a human commoner, eventually I got a bow and a pistol, I didn't realize at first, but these were tier 3 cutural weapon skins! (Which I think is a huge deal, thats's 126k karma right there, since most people get it for this skin)

Anyway, I supposingly got a pair of "Commando's Pants" at one of the lv78 quests (medium armor), it didn't look that awesome at first so I must have accidently vendored it, but just last night I saw it again in PvP locker and it worked so perfectly with one set I was aiming for. Its suprising how some pieces look a lot better with different dyes and with other pieces..

But alas, Commando's Pants was one of those skins that you only get once from the quest gears... so I will never never never have it again !!! No karma, gold, gems or master crafting can bring it back to me at this moment or to my knowledge (Horror!!)

Edit: Might as well add this in here, I know most people know this already, but in case you don't, you can only purchase order items of the order you joined, so that's a one time pick as well.

Intersting, my personal story is at level 75 (finally found an answer to get past a bugged episode, so now can finish it), and I vendored about everything without paying any attention past the stats. I did not even start previewing the looks of gear until 70. So I did not even know until reading this the rewards were anything special. Oh well, my human female mesmer looks pretty darn good and sexy in her lowbie gear and weapon skins covering 80 exotics. I do not like the looks of almost any of the high level armor or weapons. Too overdone for me. Thanks for educating my newbish self. Next character I roll I will know better.

I made the same mistake at first and lost a few item skins I'd really like back. But I got lucky and saved a few of the personal quest rewards that I thought looked really cool. Currently I'm using two of them, on my rifle and my chest piece.

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what race you pick, the WEAPON skins are always the human ones.

I actually got a Sylvari weapon skin on my personal story. It was I believe around level 16 in my story line for a greatsword. Fortunately, I saved it in my bank and just as of last night re-skinned my level 80 sword with it. I too made some of the same mistakes and did not pay any attention to the preview from about level 20 to 40ish. Fortunately the chest piece I was wanting came up around level 70 ish as I just picked it up last night as well. Thanks for posting this warning for everyone. With transmutation stones it is important to preview EVERYTHING even if the inventory icon looks the same as a normal item. I've seen great skins on some items I thought were vendor trash.

Hmm.. never really considered looking at quest rewards for their skins. I'll definitely have to keep that in mind from now on. I'm guessing "yes", but is it possible to preview the look of quest rewards?

Yes, definitely thank you for the warning. I never realized any of this nor heard about it before. I am all about the clothes and weapons "look". Right now my necro wears Shadow gear skins and my Engy wears "pirate" skins. I have issues with not looking like I want to and unfortunately this costs me - Transmute stones don't come easy I work really hard for them ;)

@ Morigana You can check out the crafted gears too if you havent, basically the mob drop and crafted gears look different, then you can preview karma vendor heart quest gears which provide a small variety as well, as you go up in level, the rare and exotic skins also vary from the green masterwork skins... so its best if you are used to their item names by looking through them in the PvP locker room, although not all will match word for word, its a good general guide.

You can preview personal story quest rewards before choosing one by using your mouse.

The quest rewards can be previewed before you choose one, at least in my experience. That's why 6 or 7 slots of my bank is clogged with them, 'just in case' I need them.

@ Susulemon All of my Shadow garb came from our marketplace and before I found it - was just going with whatever - never transmuting anything but my weapon skins that I like - but once I put on the Shadow gear for my necro I was like "OMG - this is totally awesome - OMG - I love this style" so I was sold... gives me the shaman look that I want and haven't found anything I like for her since - so every 5 levels I transmute 5 pieces of armor and my staff which has the same "bone" look (Shaman's staff) - so 6 transmutes (I have head slot off). Her RP background is loosely a cross between a shaman and a vodou priestess - Morigana La Muerte I always wanted the "Pirate" skin for my Engy since for RP purposes she was always of pirate heritage - Morigana Bloodmoon. I found it on the TP a few levels back and it was all labeled "Pirate..... " gave the coat and boots a try - then bought it all - it "fit" just right. I have to transmute 8 times each upgrade - all 6 slots and both pistols. (most pistols look like crap to me) and I also transmute the rifle since I like the thin rifles and most look like cartoon caricatures of rifles - more like what Elmer Fudd would use than my pirate. I level both of them equally - I love them both - and right now - both are 44. So every 5 levels I use 15 trnsmute stones just to keep my "look". If I could only get them to change the engy "mortar" to a pirate canon - I would be in heaven. /sigh PS. Even though I don't see a lot of RP in the game, I have to have background stories on my characters and I need them to "look" just right and have the right names. I remade these two many times over - even deleting them when they were in their 20's 2 times each - and several times before that. Half the fun of playing to me is the character herself - not just what skills she uses - the other 50% comes from the skills. So finding the right weapon skins - and even armor is very, very important to me.... right now I can't see changing the skins on either of these two characters - but I have a couple of more I am working on also ;)
