Can't decide on your class? Neither can I. =(

So, I have been having a difficult time deciding what class/archtype to play come GW2 launch. I struggle with this all the time since I like a bunch of different archtypes. In the past though, I have picked a class and then at some point (usually around the mid level range) I decide for some reason that I don't like it. Then I start over and sort of gravitate to a melee class and like it.

I just did this little quiz thing and well, I don't give much stock to these things, but this is an interesting result..interesting because in many cases it is pretty true.

http://quizfarm.com/quizzes/MMORPG/Drake123/mmo-playstyle-pics/

I got like 80% for tank, which is typically what I have enjoyed the most. I like being in the fight, taking the hits, big armor, big weapons/shields etc.

I am interested to see how this quiz pans out for many of you, do you find that it is true or just totally wrong? I had my brother help answer the questions because he knows me pretty well, knows my favored play styles and I figured and unbiased person helping to answer would give more accurate results than me trying to answer them on my own.

If anything, this could make a fun discussion.

I got healer / buffer. Unfortunately GW 2 doesn't really have a dedicated healer / buffer class. In the past I have usually gravitated towards healers, tanks / pullers or ranged dps. The only thing I know I really don't enjoy is playing melee dps classes.

Is there a profession that doesn't have melee? I know there's no profession that doesn't have at least some range. Guardian is the least range-ish. Oh, engineer has rifle, dual-pistol, or pistol-shield, and can't switch weapons in combat. So you might count it as basically all-ranged. After 2 BWEs and the stress tests, I'm still not confident I can predict my favorite profession. I only got 4 of them past level 10, so... I'm planning to be undecided. I took the quiz linked in the top post. I have been spoiled by Rift. I scored dead even for melee fighter, ranged fighter, and healer/buffer.

I always have many characters in every game I have played going back to EQ in 99. However I always end up having a paladin type tank /healer hybrid as a main , as well as a wizard type. I tend to lvl both of them to level cap. and then make another character or two too goof off on . So that gives me a guardian and a elmentalist , and when i played warhammer I played a eng as a alt , of all the characters I had both as dest and as order eng was the most fun as far as fun factor, but was the weakest due to no burst and all damage easily healed thru. However seeing gw2 has a eng which is based off the warhammer eng , I`ll have to have a eng as a alt as wether they are good or not they are always a blast to play .

Well it is not far off. I think ranger should have been higher than assassin but that's all good, pretty accurate though, my first toon will be a Charr Warrior Tank -- 80% Melee fighter -- 73% Mage -- 67% Stealther / Assassin -- 47% Archer / Ranger -- 40% Healer / Buffer -- 33%

Mage 100% Archer/Ranger 80% Healer/Buffer 80% Melee 60% Stealther/Assassin 53% Tank 13% Pretty accurate! I typically play ranged classes, although I do have a soft spot for healing as well, and I really like buffing/control/support classes too. As far as GW2 goes, I still can't decide on a class. It's going to be either a Engineer, Mesmer, Elementalist, or Ranger... and every day I settle on a different one.

I'm curious if I misunderstood a question or two.. I got this Melee Fighter - 87% Healer/Buffer - 80% Stealther/Assassin 73% Mage - 67% Archer/Ranger - 67% Tank - 40% This honestly shocks me. I hate melee, with a passion in most games. Yes, I intend to play a Thief, but a ranged thief in GW2 (SB/PP mainly, however Sword/Pistol is kind of fun). But, in Rift, I played a Saboteur, and in Warhammer, I played a Shaman/Squig Herder. In WoW, majority of my time in that game I was playing a restoration druid, at least until Wrath of the Lich King, where I played a Holy Paladin. But, near the end of Wrath, I did end up moving to retribution, and spent most of Cataclysm as a Melee Class, either Shaman/Warrior/Rogue. Perhaps I picked up on some random habits from that time frame.

Tank 73% Melee fighter 60% Mage 60% Healer / Buffer 53% Stealther / Assassin 53% Archer / Ranger 53% This seems accurate enough. I was MT/OT for my WOW guild and MT in SWTOR, so that fits. I do tend to enjoy being in the scrum. I played both guardian and warrior in the GW2 BWE's, but ended up favoring engineer by a large margin. I've always enjoyed ranged classes as well (which this did not show), but targeting was always a problem spot for me. It was always easier for me to target in melee for some reason. I will likely roll engineer at launch, but have guardian and warrior alts. I'm glad every class has some level of support ability - that element is missing from a lot of MMO's. Support to me is just as fun as tanking. I like help out my team as much as I can whether it's holding aggro, buffing them, debuffing the mobs or healing (splash or direct).

I scored in the high 80's for Mage and then Archer/Ranger and Stealth/Assassin were tied in low 60's with melee/healer trailing in 4th and 5th place in low 30's and of course tank was dead last with about a 6%... This fits me perfectly. I always have a mage as my main then a ranger and a rogue as alts... With the way I can set up my Elementalist in GW2 - who can go into melee range occassionally (Ride the Lighting is so much fun) I may not need the ranger/rogue alt - but I do want to play around with an Engineer - who is quite capable at range I like the turrets, mine fields, and bombs ;)

Profession + Race/sex -- I definitely made adjustments after looking at the armor sets in-game, and how some of the key skills look. Asura mesmer sword skill 2 = Yoda against Dooku am so tempted by the Charzooka racial elite, but my honey faced too many charr in GW1 to tolerate them now as characters. Seems a shame they didn't make the female char models into super shmexy cat chicks (such as like vah shir in EQ1). mmmm Charzooka!

Hmmm. I had a tie with Melee fighter and Assassin/stealther at the top. I've never really played those type of classes until just recently. I'm very partial to the Warrior in GW2 and I had quite a bit of fun with assassin as my main soul in one of my roles on my rogue alt in Rift. Most games I usually play as a damage dealer with moderate healing or a straight up healer(buffer/healer and mage were tied for second). I also had a blast as an engineer in Warhammer. That being said, I think I have my first four characters decided on: Warrior as my main, and Engineer, Elementalist and Ranger as my first alts. The last spot is still up in the air(until I buy more slots, hehe). But everything could change once I get in game. :)

In Ragnarok Online I played every class extensively, but I'd say I enjoyed the Hunter the most which would qualify as the Ranger. In Warhammer Online I played almost every class. I enjoyed the Magus, DoK, Swordmaster, and Slayer the most. Magus was an AoE dotter, havn't come across one in this game at all. And a Dual Axe Warrior definatly scratches the same itch the Slayer did. The Gaurdian has alot of the same mechanics as the DoK felt. And the swordmaster mechanic was so unique I doubt I'll ever see it again. In Rift my favorite Class was a Rouge, I played the Assassin for the stealth mainly. But I enjoyed the Saboteur a TON. Closest match to that would be the Engineer. In the beta weekends I tried every class to level 14ish. I enjoyed all of them to an extent but didn't have any clear winners either. Every class seemed kinda meh in effectiveness. But I think thats the theme here, no one person can dominate, it takes a team effort to accomplish anything, and so you need to find a good balance of DPS vs Support. With the total overcrowding of the Warrior as DPS and the Ranger as Support, I'm not sure exactly what to play. It was difficult in other games to play support because buffs of the same name didn't stack. But in GW2 Boons DO stack. One thing I can say tho, all of the classes I enjoyed the most, the Hunter, Magus, and the Rouge, had one thing in common: Traps. So I might make a Ranger or Thief JUST for the traps. I was totally looking forward to the Engineer because of the Mine kit, but they changed it from 5 mines to ONE. So Dissapointing. /wall In Short, Either a Dual Axe Warrior to relive my Slayer days. Or a Trapper Ranger/Thief.

Did they really change the Eng mine kit to one mine???? That's not a kit, that's an accessory. I played Eng in BWE2 but not the last one and had great fun with mines for defending bridges and entrances to encampments and such. also had great fun with the grenades - but I just can't believe that the mine kit is now just one mine... that is a tad absurd - imho - and a bit disappointing.

Archer / Ranger 80% Melee fighter 67% Tank 67% Mage 60% Stealther / Assassin 53% Healer / Buffer 40% Normally i'll play either a stealth based class or tank. I've done casters and they're not my cup of tea, but ranger? No thanks. I think they over weighted the single target, low armor, and high damage output to ranger where that's my preference for assassins.

I will no doubt be running a dual pistol Engineer Elixir build with weapon swap to pistol/shield for defense and reflect option. It worked very well in PVE and PVP for me. http://www.gw2db.com/skills/calc/engineer#10|10|2729|4053|2454|4052|4065|10|1422|0|0|30|1419|2269|1426|0|0|0|0|30|1470|1033|1473|0|0|0|0|0|0| I have been looking at other engineers and their specs, and sadly I have seen this exact build being used by others(I see the nerf bat in the future). Here's a video of the exact build in action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EX4RrHO2s0g In the video he talks about using 2 runes of the earth, one on each pistol...I don't believe they stack like that, I may be wrong.

After yesterdays stress test I looked at mines again and I don't mind the changes so much. The ability tosses out a group of 5 mines (at your location) - various sizes that detonate on proximity or using the detonator and then there is an additional ability to toss out 1 mine (targeted area - short range) that detonates by proximity or using the detonator (separate detonators for both abilities) and has a knockback plus damage. The set of mines has a 45 sec. cool down but the individual mine is on a 15 sec cooldown and you don't have to swap to it from your main weapon. The detonator has a huge distance to let it work - not sure I could ever get too far away. I need to test out if I can drop more than one mine after the cool down expires (or if the first mine disappears) and thus setup a bigger defence when I know an attack is coming - I will do that today. I'm liking the engineer more - the more I play her.

You Scored as Healer / Buffer You stay back and heal your comrades in battle. You also provide them with buffs which make them stronger and make them live longer. Mage 67% Healer / Buffer 67% Stealther / Assassin 53% Melee fighter 47% Archer / Ranger 47% Tank 47% Too funny. I actually had to answer a tie breaker question when I did this. But I can say in the standard trinity type of MMOs I was usually the healer or the mage! However, I did play a swordmaster as my main in RvR in Warhammer because I just wanted to be in other player's faces when I fought them.

I HAVE DECIDED Sylvari Engineer. Turret Spec. That is all. Morigana: Yeah its true you can still LAY 5 mines, but its a random pattern and you can't stack them anymore, made PVE easymode. But it still would be usefull in WvW. Also the Charr have a racial skill to lay another mine. I also chose to be an Engineer based on the fact that they have the most different playstyles of any character. Flametank, Elixer Support, BOMB support, Turret Lockdown, Grenade Artillery, and the list goes on...making it a prime choice for an altoholic to play without jumping to different characters.

I will have an engineer also - just because of the grenades and bombs - but I am not fond of the rifle abilities (I have an issue with an aility that kicks me on my own butt) - and only so - so on pistols. But the grenades and bombs are just too much fun... but I haven't played with the turrets too much. I just haven't decided on my race - I'd love to be Norn - but they feel clunky... Sylvari just don't feel right for my idea of warfare... The whole "Everything has a right to grow" and I'm having too much fun killing things by "mowing" them down (yep - that pun was intentional). I'll probably end up as a human. So an elementalist will be my main, then an engineer alt and a hunter alt (because I like collecting pets).

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page I would also read the wiki that's up for the game.... It only confused me more - but it might help someone decide on their profession - lots of great detail on abilities/skills and it is usually things like what abilities a profession has that helps me decide since I RP my characters. Ex. I have now added the Necro to my list of characters that I wish to try - damn I am confused.

Melee fighter 67% Archer / Ranger 67% Healer / Buffer 67% Tank 67% Mage 53% Stealther / Assassin 53% Well that helps.

I got: Mage 60% Archer / Ranger 60% Healer / Buffer 60% Tank 60% Melee fighter 53% Stealther / Assassin 53% Big help that was! In other words, I'm either equally suited or equally unsuited for just about anything. =\ I would definitely rearrange the list (Healer/Buffer would move to the top, and Mage would move down below Melee Fighter), but otherwise it seems fairly accurate, I suppose.

Pretty accurate, I generally play healer/support and mages. Scout is second, tank is last. "You Scored as Mage You stand behind the tanks and send fireballs and other spells flying at the enemy. Mage 93% Healer / Buffer 87% Stealther / Assassin 73% Melee fighter 67% Archer / Ranger 60% Tank 40% "

Mesmer and Engineer are cool and creative classes.... I would like to have a try of them when playing second or third classes. For the first one, I think I will choose elementalist.

Engineer has kits, one of those is the "tool kit" this kit contains the melee type attacks for the class.

I got: Healer / Buffer 87% Mage 80% Archer / Ranger 67% Stealther / Assassin 60% Melee fighter 53% Tank 47% i find this to be very acturate because i'm been mainly healz. i am still struggling greatly what class to do in gw2 because of the lack of a main healz spec. (though peeps have been helpful @ pointing out ele-water healz, as does guardian, and apparently ranger w/ it's pet.)

You Scored as Mage You stand behind the tanks and send fireballs and other spells flying at the enemy. Mage 93% Healer/Buffer 87% Melee Fighter 67% Stealther/Assassin 60% Tank 47% Archer/Ranger 46% Not 100% accurate for me, but close. Archer and some form of healer are always first for me then I branch out. Tanks are an absolute no go and I usually avoid melee in most MMO's because I hate getting hit, but apparently (as I found out in Tera and GW2) if I have the option to avoid getting hit, I like melee dps.

I got 67% ranger, 67% mage, and 43% stealther. So my original concept of mesmer stands. YAY! ...or would I rather play elementalist. Hmmmmm That said, the thought of an asura guardian cracks me up to no end. I dream of using that wall in the staff line and yelling, "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!"

OK OK I was so sure I was playing an Engineer as my main, however during the last stress test I played a Necro and it was way more fun than the Engineer. Right now its a 50/50 split. I scored: You Scored as Mage You stand behind the tanks and send fireballs and other spells flying at the enemy. Mage 73% Melee fighter 60% Archer / Ranger 60% Healer / Buffer 60% Stealther / Assassin 53% Tank 27% Issue is I do see the Necro being nerf'd; from what I have seen on youtube they are crazy strong.

Melee fighter 80% Mage 80% Healer / Buffer 80% Tank 53% Archer / Ranger 40% Stealther / Assassin 33% Very surprised about melee scoring so high. I expected a split involving tank, not melee. I hate melee. I've usually a healer or mage class, though Rift got me into tanking as well. And in Fiesta I played an archer, and will be playing an Engi in GW2

I'm hoping Starfire hasn't so I don't feel like the only one who is still torn at the last minute on which class to choose... ;-P At least I have narrowed it down to 2.. I think. Engineer or Ranger. If I keep stressing the decision like I am I'll likely throw my monitor out the window. Lands upright - Engineer. Lands upside down - Ranger. -niri

I've narrowed down to 3... Char Engineer, Norn Ranger, Asura Guardian. I'll make all 3 and then just play them until one stands out as the clear victor.

Starfire, I am the same way. I can never decide what I want to start out with. I gave up and decided that I will have to try everything. I'll probably start with a Norn Ranger, a Human Guardian, a Sylvari Mesmer, a Charr Elementalist and an Asuran something or other (not sure which yet). Not sure what will be my "main", but it might be the ranger. I only say that because my main in WOW is my hunter, so it could be something else. Good luck!

I'm so glad to see that others are suffering from indecisivitis (totally a real disease and not something I just made up). I've had to stop watching videos and/or trying other professions in the stress tests because I need to narrow my choices and stop expanding them. Necro Thief Engineer Decisions are hard and make my brain tired.

The Guardian has very strong buffing skills and helping people out in general skills. The beauty of this game though is no dedicated healer. You really are responsible for your own health.
