So is anyone either testing an 85 char till oct 15 or boosting an existing one?  I know there are a lot of classes out there now, but what classes are the best for soloing if you just want to fool around these next 15 days? Also is the Beast Lord comparable to EQ 1?

Everquest 2 has a special event going on.

I have thought about trying it out again with this special going on.  I stopped playing before they reintroduced the beastlord.

Oh?  I'm falling out of touch with things, this is the first I've heard about it, don't recall seeing any email or social media... hm.  I'll have to check it out.  Good game, I really like it, have since its Beta, but never give it the time that I should, seems to always be another new shiny to play with instead.

I used to play eq2 up until I finally cancelled my sub a couple months ago.  Then I heard about this  free heroic char, so I am checking it out as well.   I haven't leveled a BL so take what I say with a grain of salt.  This is just from my experience with friends who play(ed) BL/what I remember about BL.

I didn't play a BL in eq1 (I played a necro) so I can't be of much help on comparing them.

In eq2 the BL is nice, they do well in groups to spot heal using spiritual (defensive stance) and are good dps.   I had a friend who was a 95 BL that let me tag along after him in instances.  He could solo through the instances quickly.   Raids generally don't want BL, they tend to rip aggro off MT if I  remember correctly  (that was the reason the raiding guild I was in didn't want one raiding anyway).  BL might not have a deaggro, not sure.  That could be the problem if that is the case (as far as raiding is concerned).  I rolled a BL but she's lvl locked at 17 while I was working on her AA.

The issue is with starting out at 85 is that

1. With BL you  need to lvl affinity with the warders (pets) and they gain affinity slowly while you level.   You start at Journeyman if doing Heroic Char (rolled one last night to check it out).

2.  Nothing is more annoying than someone high level playing a class they don't know how to play (if you are primarily soloing I guess that doesn't matter really).  I am sorry if that sounded blunt, I don't mean to sound mean or rude.  But, some classes you really need to start at square one so you can learn the class.  Although, you could just learn as you go, read guides, etc. That being said, Zam has a good guide for BL.  I am sure there are other good ones out there too (definitely check flames).   Also, check u.eq2wire.com for AA specs of top BL in game/on server.

3.  Starting at 100 AAs is nice but leveling AA at a higher level takes longer.  It is better to lvl lock at a lower lvl and fill them up more on the lower side than grinding AA at the higher lvls IMHO.  A friend of mine would lvl lock at lvl 12 or so and grind aa like nobody's business.  She would then go up to mid twenties and start  the grind all over again.  AA's come much faster that way and you aren't stuck trying to grind at 95.  P.S. they are upping the AAs in the new expansion to 340 IIRC.

What I plan to do with the free Heroic Char is look at classes I have played for a while but are low lvl.  I have 47 conj (I had lvled one to around 70 and rerolled cause I was bored with her).  I am thinking about rolling the free heroic char as a conj because I have a pretty good idea how the class works.  I don't want to suck because I am clueless about whichever class I choose to use the heroic char freebie for.

Definitely wish you luck whichever class you choose :)  BTW, what server are you on?

P.S. to go with my point #1 about affinity ....there are 16 warder families, 12 normal, 4 exotic (bats/avian/reptiles/feline/canine/etc) and you would have to level affinity individually on the ones you planned to use.  In other words, you might not want to do much with some of the warder families and focus on a few.  But you would still need to lvl affinity on the ones you wanted.  You wouldn't start lvling affinity until lvl 30 IIRC, but that is still 55 lvls that you could have lvl'd affinity that were lost.

I was fooling around on Antonia Bayle with different classes.  I totally understand what you mean with being a noob and starting at 85. To be honest the way Sony did it this time I have no idea where to  travel with  my characters after the few initial quests. I did explore a bit but I couldnt figure out where to go for the following your destiney quest so I dont think I am going to end up playing past the two weeks. I have played in the past to lv22 with a brigand but there was no one to group with so i gave up.  Thanks for taking the time to reply on the BL and i do remember in EQ1 the BL (when I was playing it could have changed after i left) did not have an agro dump. Anyway have a great weekend

I was wrong, I do stand corrected the Bear Pet is Grandmaster (all other pets are journeyman).  Also you end up with 280 AA (IIRC) when you choose to upgrade that toon.  When you do the try before you buy trial (when you create the 85 toon) it is more restricted than when you choose the toon and make it the free Heroic Char.  So I was wrong, my apologies on that.

Not knowing how to play ones class efficiently at max level is pretty standard in EQ2 for both Grouping and Raiding.   You can learn all you need to know at max level.  You will learn it wrong as you level, by design.

My opinion on this is shaped by the percentage of applicants to the raiding guilds I in, that we had to train out of Raid wiping habits, that would of been fine soloing or grouping.

times must have changed liyren or atleast in EQ 2  because in EQ orginal  players learned how to play lvling up  and 75 % of  the players that were  above lvl 50 in the old days were  very good players same as a few year ago most of the players by the time they were 75 + were very good

but that could be from most of the people still playing had been playing for more then 3 years  haha . skill lvl in org EQ was very high  and the death penalty was steep and unforgiving  but that also was the reason a lot of players skill was above average due to pushing their limits to avoid death   unlike games today where death is used as a faster way to map out a zone lol .

No Dirk, that's just standard hardcore raid guild mentality.  We had that mentality back in EQ, too, you just don't remember it or were not in a hardcore raiding guild.  I was in a couple of the #1's throughout my time and what Llyren described is exactly how the raid leaders saw it: "Forget what you know, we'll retrain you our way, which is the right way."

I don't think it was as bad in Everquest, but yeah I can confirm it for there as well.  Everquest and Everquest 2 are very different games.

Everquest 2 was especially bad. One example was through a respec of their AA's and some cast order coaching I was able to help them double their DPS overall, not just for group length fights, but for raid boss length fights, and trash pulls.   It was still not considered enough for a Raiding Swashbuckler at our level of play.    Her DPS at the beginning of this experience was fine for group and solo play, and had been considered a very good player compared to the average grouping Swashbuckler.

The average grouping Swashbuckler  was doing one fifth to one sixth the DPS of one of our geared Raiding Swashbucklers at that time.

I would agree that this attitude is common among Raiding Guilds.  Sometimes though it was for good reason.

nah sekk i was in a high end raid guild number 2 on our server  we were on ayrona ro in Sphere of Transcendence ,   so yea most of my guildes and the other guilds we played with were all the top raiders .

I remember once  i went to goof off in  a lower tier zone ie we were clearing planer of time and i went to screw around in plane of valor , as a pally and the cleric had to leave as did the shammy and group was all non raid peeps they freaked out when i took over as main tank, puller and only healer and we  killed faster then they were doing with a cleric and shammy for slows lol .

Same as once me and a guild cleric went to plane of valor and evened up in a pug group with another  from the 3rd raid guild on the server and 3 non raiders they were freaking out when we got trained had no chanter and we were just ghetto parking ie rooting mobs , we got trained and ended up with 10 mobs rooted and had respawn on us lol we killed all 10 and the respawn with no deaths , the non raiders were freaking out haha , was most fun ever we all had  10 % mana and hp at the end but was a blast .

they were going dude you are in plane of time , and can exp in any of the zones why mess around here and we were all  well we see those all the time , its fun to go back to the old zones .

Just seemed to me the there were better players overall but a lot of it was  gear aswell , i remember i had over 19k hp at the time as a pally and 14k mana  which was crazy and a non raid pally had around i knew had only 8k hp and 5k mana .

I actualy miss EQ but they made it to much of a  grind with them always adding  more and more AAs to get  got bored  grinding  AA every new expansion between raids .

I was on AyRo too, I do recall that guild.  Not sure I'd call them "hardcore", not that's a bad or good thing, just that not every raiding guild had the mentality that I speak of.  I've been in guilds with that "we'll teach you our way" mentality... I'm not talking about hearing rumors about it, I'm talking about having been a part of it.

But that was a long, long time ago, in a MMORPG far, far away.

So, getting back to Heroic characters... any suggestions?  The last time I played EQ2, things were... different.  SKs were social pariahs, incredible easy mode, everyone had one, the butt of jokes and bad players.  Some of the other classes were considered worthless, I forget which, just the SKs stood out because I'd created a Freeblood SK and invested some SC into it, but then found out that was a bad idea.

Lets see, what classes do I have on tap: Swashbuckler. Dirge, Wizard, Assassin, Inquisitor, Shadowknight, Beastlord, Monk and Warden.  All of them are sub-20, many years ago I was playing on the Bazaar store servers and had decided to play on Antonia Bayle, so I deleted all my characters (at the time there were no moves off those servers or clue they'd ever shut down those servers and move characters off) and recreated a bunch, but I just always found another game to distract me so never really re-leveled my new toons.

I'm very much out of touch with this game now, but I recall hearing about class imbalances, so not sure which class would be best to make Heroic.  I probably will not raid, those days are long behind me, I've wasted enough of my life to get others virtual crap in previous games, so I will mostly just plan for solo or group stuff with friends or something.

If folks play and are up to date on classes, you are most welcome to toss some input at me.  I have a ton of SC and can buy new character slots, so not limited to what I mentioned as having so far.

I am not up to date on the current state of EQ2's class imbalances.

My fondest memories of Everquest are taking my static group to Plane of Fire back in Planes of Power days and camping the back castle.  The entire back castle, minus the Raid Boss.     Next best are some "impossible" corpse recoveries I pulled off on my Rogue.

heheh Everquest nostalgia...

On that note, over the summer, based on my high /age time in GW2 (it hit 2900 as of June), I got curious about how many hours I've spent gaming since a gamer friend first got me involved with TeleArena, then Arctic MUD and Sojourn MUD, back in 1992,  so I calculated out some conservative average values and realized that I've spent ~45,000 hours in graphical MMOS, since Everquest released, with another ~30,000 hours in text based MMOs going back to 1992.  (Being young meant I could work 8, sleep 4-5 and game the rest.)

So, I have so many gaming memories, that I really don't experience "nostalgia" anymore.  Sure I have some favorite moments and specific memories, but they're all starting to meld together as I get older, I find myself starting to mix up memories and games LOL.

Needless to say, I decided to take a break, especially from GW2, but that lasted about 3 weeks while I mourned the death of my little parrot and hermited it up, but then I got sucked back in with FFXIV and now I'm right back to pattern again.

Man, I need to figure out a way to turn all of that time and experience into income.  Huge chunk of my life there.  o.O  I really should never have taken a calculator to it, ignorance was bliss.  LOL
