Hello fellow Gaiscioch!,

Has anyone heard about the upcoming game Titanfall? (It swept E3's awards):

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/gaming/2013/07/02/respawn-titanfall-wins-e3-game-critics-awards/2482763/

Titanfall was nominated for 6 awards, and won all six:

Best of Show: Titanfall (Respawn/EA for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One)
Best Original Game: Titanfall
Best Console Game: Titanfall
Best PC Game: Titanfall
Best Action Game: Titanfall
Best Online Multiplayer: Titanfall

(As a side note, Elder Scrolls Online only won: Best Role Playing Game).

I know many of us are eagerly awaiting for ESO. But I was curious if any of you are also waiting to play Titanfall? (I'd never heard about it until now).

How does Gaiscioch stand toward FPS games?  Personally, I'm not a fan, but this game looks off the hook - (like a cross between Mech-Warrior and Tribes and Call of Duty.

Please see my what makes a gaiscioch chapter in the ask the elders section. That covers the bases.

I've never even heard of Titanfall.  Is it sci-fi?

Nvm did the research myself. Sci Fi it is.

Alarm bells went off when I saw the EA tag personally.

Fill me in about the alarm bells with EA!!?? :)

Like you, I also had not heard of Titanfall.  So i've been doing some research.

From what I've read, two former game developers of Call of Duty branched out and formed their own company, called Respawn Entertainment.  They are using EA to publish their first game, Titanfall.

Since there is only a trailer to the game (and no release date mentioned), it will be interesting to see how the game stacks up to Foghladha's post What makes a game a Gaiscioch Chapter?.

I think Titanfall will be a better suited game for the Xbox.  Perhaps this game will never meet the criteria for a Gaiscioch chapter, but I think a really good multiplayer console game would be fun to play with other guildies.

Garyc, as i understand it Gaiscioch will never have a full chapter in a science fiction themed game.  This game falls under that heading if i am not mistaken.  It could/would probably make an excellent saighdear game tho since there are fps fans in the family.

**edit**  i was wondering since there are lots and lots of new mmo (rpg, fps, more to come) style games coming out and the shear enormity of people who call gaiscioch family/home, would it be cool if somebody could define sci-fi and fantasy as it relates to what gsch (i am looking at you ben :P).  also if it is already posted somewhere feel free to /slap Ruw in the head.

Were looking for dark age of camelot style. The closer the better. Celtic themed realms a big plus. Anything with starships, photons, space travel is a no. Steampunk is right on the border of the comfort zone. Were looking for a medieval style game. Swords, Bows, Staves, catapults, and trebuchets.

My reaction to titanfall? "Oh look, CoD with mechs." I find it laughable that it won "Best Original game" when nothing about it is original.

Seeing past content from EA and the CoD folks, I highly doubt this will have any sort of long-term play designed. Short single player campaign, possibly co-op, but the real "game" will be PvP, just like the CoD and Battlefield franchises have become.

Respawn is the fragments of Infinity Ward that Activision spurned - in fact, it was the two founders of Infinity Ward that were fired, Jason West and Zince Zampella. One founded Respawn and tons of people at Infinity Ward quit to join Respawn. Part of the agreement with EA was that Respawn would retain all IP rights - essentially EA has only distribution rights. There's a very long, well written article about the whole thing in a recent issue of Game Informer (I think it was June issue). Jason West never really joined up with the development of games before leaving for family issues (surprise, game development is not conducive to having a happy family!).

In any case, Zampella went out of his way to ensure that EA would have no voice in the development of Respawn games - hopefully that sticks. Titanfall is a lot more than CoD with mechs, if you watch gameplay footage and read the article in Game Informer. Besides that, there are very few avenues for "original" games these days.

The originality of this game is in the melding of the single player campaign and the multiplayer game. It's more like an MMO than a traditional multiplayer, as the single player campaign occurs during multiplayer gaming - in essence you are running your "quests" while playing in a hostile environment - like an MMO PVP server.

That said, I think Project Spark! was the no brainer for "best original game."

Unfortunately EA has a long history of ruining MMO's that I've seen them involved with. If they hand hands in ESO it would be out already, 1/2 finished, no polished, and 6 months after launch it'd be hemorrhaging players. I trust nothing that EA has a hand in. They do Madden well... I guess.. that's about it IMO. The better that the whole MMO market is the better each MMO will be, but pushing out games to get back investment capital is a surefire way to launch an incomplete game that will fail... MMO that launch incomplete are doomed.... SW:TOR anybody?

Garyc, I'll tell you why I personally have concerns with EA as a publisher.

I need to use software to play the game (EA Origin)

I pay the same amount of money for a digital copy of the game as what I would for a physical hard copy with jewel case and manual

Downloadable content is announced before a new game has even launched, eg: battlefield 4

They have a habit of ruining everything they touch, for example; Warhammer Online.

They actually hold the title of worst company in America and have so for the past two years in a row.

Now, I know the difference between a developer and a publisher, I love DICE (the guys who make the Battlefield franchise) and I think they make marvellous games, but I absolutely abhor Electronic Arts because they take more than they give.

Bivrip,

I have the exact same thoughts.   It is actually no interest for me.  I will do some FPS as a distraction once in a while, but the actual MMO is my true love.  And even as a distraction TF doesn't appeal to me.  I saw the demo from E3 and was even attracted to it.  I'm really not a mech warrior type of granny ;)  Give me a pistol or a blade in my hand - or a rifle and I'm by your side.

It's interesting to note that while ESO won the 2013 award for best Role Playing Game, it was the game "South Park: The Stick of Truth" that won the 2012 award for best Role Playing Game.  (And in 2011, it was Skyrim that won).

Makes you wonder how E3 determines which games win the awards.  I certainly would not buy a game just because it won an E3 award.

Ok, so it DID make me wonder who does the voting.  It turns out there are about 30 judges who are usually editors from commercial publications. (Publications who may receive monetary gain from gaming companies who advertise in their publication).   Ahh, now I can understand how a game like Southpark is considered on the same level as Skryim and ESO.  Hmmmm...

Xbox, the biggest reason I am not interested in it. Why should I have to pay for gold membership to play an MMO ;P I'm also really not into FPS heheh

That being said, I really really dislike MS and can't wait to sell my 3 xbox 360 to get a PS4 ;P (but that's another story ;P )

I would love to see a Shadowrun mmo , or even a  Ravenloft, Darksun  or Dragonlance setting mmo .

Warhammer should have been great , it had great lore, awsome classes, backstory, the behind the story details with undead, dark elfs maniuplating the green skins etc a gritty dark world  hehe  sooo much potential  wasted

on EA money grab .

if you ever read any of the back story etc the lore was  really good  how the dark elfs dressed up in high elf  armor raided a dwarf  garrsion wiped them out but purposely left a few alive to report back that the high elfs broke the alliance .

Which started a war between the dwarf and high elfs resulting in the phonix king being killed by the  dwarf king . while this was happening the dark elf used the diversion to invade the high elf lands .

Since they used  magic amulets to control the orcs and goblins tricking them into  invade the humies lands and keep the humans  busy hehe .  making the high elf homeland undefended and no allys to call for aid .

EA shut down Motor City Online after it had been released for about 6 months.  Decided they really wanted to put all resources into Need For Speed becasue they could sell so many more copies on the consoles.

Sony is another one that I cringe when I see them associated with an MMO.  I was a SWG day one player :(

EA as a pure distributor(which appears to be the case here) is great

EA as a developer is quite good

EA as a publisher is terrible as they basically take over the project and force designs that clash with the developers original intentions and refuse to accept delays.

This game definitely interests me, I have played a fair amount of CoD in my lifetime and always preferred the Infinity Ward ones. I will probably end up getting this for the Xbox One either when it comes out or after its first price drop.
