I knew this was coming, so it's not as depressing as it might be for people who have lost sight suddenly. I have a genetic eye problem that is slowly wiping out my side vision, and it's made my night vision so bad that the retina doc finally pulled my night driving. I'm doing a side vision test at the end of the month to see if I can keep my daylight driving privileges. The laws on that are much stricter in PA than in WI, so it doesn't look promising.
Yes, there's definitely irony in an eye doc losing vision, but I got into the field because I have crappy eyes and wanted to help others. Calling the Bureau for the Blind/Visually Impaired for _me_ instead of my patients was kind of freaky. The counselor is going to come out to my house to help with some safety issues and to help with the night vision loss--most likely with a little hat with a light on it to see where I'm walking at night. Right now I have to use my phone as a flashlight! The idea of using a white cane at night is really bugging me. I suppose I have to learn to get over that, but it doesn't mean I have to like it!
The good news: I will not go totally blind most likely. The bad news: my job as an eye doc is in the next county over from me, and there's no public transportation between the 2 main cities. If I lose my driver's license, I lose my job. There aren't any openings in my home town at this time.
While I'll qualify for disability after some time, I'd much rather keep working. I've been doing some freelance writing with Textbroker, and I write regularly for TORWars.com on a volunteer basis to build my article writing skills. I'm working on my certification as a medical writer with the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), since I particularly enjoy that. We can survive without my income, but it will be very, very tight, and that scares me more than anything else. On top of that, I'm going to need a knee replacement this year some time, so working from home is going to be the best option.
If you all know anyone who needs a solid writer/researcher/communicator/people-person, please let me know.
Prayers and positive thoughts will be most welcome, too! It's going to be a big change for the entire family.
