Skylanders has my daughter hooked. Not an mmo but its multiplayer.
Which set is better (giants or original), or should he just start with the spyro starter pack?
Giants. Theres a new one coming this fall. Toys are an expense that can get out of hand. Make him level each to 15 before you get another. My daghter has them all. Freakin expensive hobby lol
My sons play Spiral Knights and they love it :) They are 10 years old
My two 8 year old boys play GW2 lol.

My daughter is 9 and there is a TON of kids in her school playing http://www.Minecraft.net
Basically, like Legos, dig, build, create....different modes to play (survival/creative) and endless amount of servers to play on (some with 200+ ppl) Don't llet the graphics fool you, the gameplay is amazing. Can also play it offline and there is no sub fees. Just buy it andplay it and search Minecraft sites for IP addresses of popular servers.
The other four links I posted above are very solid, safe, MMO's that are also free to play, with options to buy some items in cash shops.

Thanks for your input guys. Hopefully I can excite him with one of them.
Look out.. Disney Infinity is coming in August ;) Marrra and I have it preordered already :P
Is Maple Story still a thing? All the 8 year olds I knew used to play that...
I have recently been looking for something for our 9 year old daughter as well. Thank you for the lists and feedback. We have settled for now on pirate101. Not exactly my style of game but she seems to like it.

Great to know. My 6 year old is becoming more intrigued with my MMO. He finds it fascinating when I use Raidcall and play with real people with their avatars running around on my screen. Currently he and I are hooked on a Tower defense game on the Ipad called Balloon something. Tower defense games are addictive, and this one is cute with you picking diffrent types of monkeys to kill the ballons before they get to the other side.
I'd go for the suggestions above, too. My daughter and I play the Pokemon games together, too, although it's not exactly an MMO.
Dungeon Defenders is on sale @ Gamefly.com for $3.75 until 4/15 @ 11:59PDT TONS of free mods and maps for this game.
My daughter is 7 and she loves "Spore" with the expansion "Spore galaxy". And "Skylanders" if she has a friend over. She also plays GW2 with me.
