So, we took my golden retriever, Honey Buns, to the vet to see about what is causing her to have blood in her urine. Couldn't find anything, though they think it might be an infection. They drew some blood for heartworm testing, and she came back positive. I am so ----------------- mad right now I want to destroy something. I feel like taking my fists and head to my walls right now.

And if she came back positive, then there is a huge likelyhood that my other 3 have it as well. And just for my Honey, the treatment will be $1100-$1200, so multiply that by 4 for all 4 of my girls. Thankfully the vet will let us make payments on Honey's treatment.

And then we get to some even better news (pardon the sarcasm), in the fact that the treatment for this could possibly kill her (and in extension, kill my other 3 if they have it as well). If they die because of this, my time in this place is over with. I will pack some crap, and just walk away. And I will rage if any of them die from this. I am praying so hard that it is only my Honey Buns that has this problem, and not all 4 of my girls.

That's awful :( I'll keep all my fingers and toes crossed that it's only Honey Buns that's affected, and that she comes through treatment with flying colours. Goldies are tough, and I know she can beat this! Also, vets can also be wildly inaccurate with probabilities. My Goldie got sick just before Christmas and I was told she only had days at best, but she came home and kept chugging until earlier this month. They're powered by love! Positive thoughts & prayers to you, Honey Buns and the other girls – please keep us updated! *hugs* Aeth

Hope everything works out ok. Sometimes our family members get sick and there's just not much to be done. At least you have the option to treat here.

Over a grand for HW treatment? I've NEVER heard of that! I work a lot with rescues and have dealt with HW+ dogs a lot. The hardest part is keeping their activity low. I'd get a second opinion, and possibly a third. ** I just asked a friend who has HW+ dog in her care right now. If the worm load is low, they can just give a high dose of HW preventative and it will kill the worms. It can take months (she's on month 5 right now, still got worms, but they're dying). She's sitting at about $300 in treatment thus far. That's WAY less than what you were quoted. I would be quick to look for an alternative, your dog does not need to be pumped full of chemicals. There are holistic alternatives as well, I'm just not sure what they are offhand. We (the rescue I've fostered for) have always just used the generic heartgard for HW treatment. As far as blood in the urine, if they ruled out infection, it's likely caused by an injury. Either some really REALLY rough play, or possibly a small kidney stone (dogs get those too). If your dog seems in good spirits, I wouldn't worry TOO much, unless she keeps bleeding or it's bright red. The brighter (redder) the blood, the fresher it is.
