The Secret World is now F2P

From what I read, it is like the GW model. You have purchase the game, but no subscription after that. It is interesting to see someone else trying the same model.

I'll contact you when I get on. This game was a ridiculous amount of fun and I bought the entire Lovecraft collection off Amazon for my kindle for like $3.00

Do you still have to buy a copy? I got the impression it was free without having to buy a copy. I could have misread the announcement.

I just found out about this, via Twitter this morning. I was in shock, because I don't recall Funcom ever mentioning that they were going in this direction with TSW. Maybe they did and my memory is just bad. I know they've been in trouble and Ragnar Tornquist has wandered off to another project, The Longest Journey game. I have a Grand Master Lifetime, so it kind of freaked me out when I checked my Twitter feed and saw all of the tweets about it. After reading the FAQ however, it sounds like they took care of us Grand Master account holders. I am quite happy with it, TSW is a very fun game that I don't play nearly as much as I should. Let's see, I'm on Arcadia RP server, I have a Dragon named "Nelfaar" and a Templar named "Sekkerhund" (who holds the Waelwulfas guild in TSW) and I need to re-roll my Illuminati to Arcadia (think I can do that now), which will be "Daencyn".

Yup. I misread it. You gotta give them $30 for the client and thus it goes to the GW model. I approve and hope it means the game stays afloat. Because you have to purchase the client, they do not properly consider it free to play. Therefore, Ragnar's recent comments that there are absolutely no plans for the game to go free to play still hold true, albeit by a technicality. Also, to be fair to him, he was probably ordered by his superiors to say that. Sekkerhund, you can do server transfers. I think you have to buy them in the cash shop, but you can do them.

Excellent. I did some of the beta for TSW but due to money at the time, never bought the game. I knew it would go F2P eventually but it is amazingly good to see it go down the Guild Wars path of F2P. This I will keep my eye on and see if I can buy it post-Christmas.

I would like to try it out, but I cannot see myself splitting the time between two MMOs. Maybe I will give it a shot if GW2 ever starts to lose its luster.

I'm excited by this. I have a lifetime membership already and it sounds like they're treating us well enough. I figured it would go this route and was a bit afraid as to how they'd treat the lifetime players. Whew! This also means that some people I know that liked the game in beta but just couldn't justify paying another subscription will now be more tempted to play. I love GW2, but The Secret World was really cool as well. So now maybe I'll get to play it more! :)

Anyone that wants a home if they play dragon we have one set up since the game went live. After SWTOR started to decline some of us went to TSW. The old site for the swtor guild is the site for the tsw guild. Reclis is in it so am I. If anyone needs and invite to it let me know. Only condition is you have to be dragon. if your not that does not matter in terms of grouping for dungeon and raid content the only thing affected is pvp . So if you decide to give this game a try we could set up some things. Me, Sara Reclis were all playing it til GW2 came out. They have recently released some raid content its pretty quick also can be done in 5 mins so its designed for the casual player. Maybe we can get something going if enough play it. Registerd on the site, Toros. The most recent announcement there (dated 9/16) says that the site is closing down (as in not being payed for any longer) due to inactivity. Does it have a limit to the # of posts allowed for non-paying accounts or anything like that (guild portal does that)? Please feel free to friend me and shoot me an invite to the SW cabal. Like I said, I do not play much, but I really adore the game when I do and it is not crashing on me (it does not like my video card).

Fantastic game. The only MMO that I really enjoy the PvE in. Atmosphere is a cross between Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, and Walking Dead. Questing is fresh and unique. Some of the puzzles are very challenging.

I was waiting years for the game then did 1 beta weekend and wanted to punch someone. It might have just been a bad beta but the graphics looked like EQ era graphics and the system was ehh. I really shoudl of tried it after it came out but was scared to spend money on it after that bad weekend. Guess I might have to look at it again.

@Nostiger - The character creation leaves a lot to be desired, but the graphics and overal visual and audio ambience in TSW is off the freaking hook. Never judge a game by just one Beta, and tbh, I can't recall a "bad graphics" BWE. I was also in the CB and don't recall "EQ era graphics". @Toros - Which server? The only reason I care about that, is the PVP restriction on that one zone is specific to server. Unless they finally made it a world PVP zone, it was a common complaint. @Crash - well, server doesn't matter, but I'm just a bit OCD about having them all on the same server, especially since one PVP zone is server-only and not unified world-wide like the others. I rerolled her this morning, it wasn't a problem, it was a new character anyway, but Arcadia was open for new character creaetions, so that's good news for folks.

I've been playing TSW again, even before this announcement, the current ARG got me fired up again. I'm Dysnomia (Dragon), Cryochilled (Dragon), PsiPhi (Templar), and Pheyd (Illuminati). My Dragons are on Aracdia, not that that matters except for PvP. Send me a message in-game and we can run around together.

Crash the only thing it does is limit my storage on the site from 10 gbs to 3 gbs and puts ads on the site as far as I know. Ill log into the site and give u access. If any of you want invites to the dragon guild let me know on here a good time to invite you Ill log into tsw to do it.

Will move a Dragon toon (CTOG "Mindseye" CTOG) over to Arcadia when I have enough points. In the meantime, I am CTOG "Snurg" CTOG (AR/SG), Illuminati on Arcadia. I also have a Templar named CTOG "Jakooki" CTOG on Arcadia.

I expect FFXIV Realm Reborn to go the same route in the future and same thing with World of Warcraft too.

I haven't played the game since the release of GW2 - but that is mainly due to no one to play with. I never really found a cabal to join but made it over to Egypt with my Templar. I had fun in the game... it was just a lack of friends that pulled me to GW2 - running with the family is too much fun. I'll patch the game when I get settled after my move this coming week and after Christmas and let you know what the heck I'm doing. I didn't have a Dragon but I am actually not opposed to starting a new character on a new server to get a fresh take on the game all over again - and Dragon was my second choice for society. I loved the whole setting - and have always been a huge HP fan and conspiracy theory nut - and the modern day setting is a nice touch. Hopefully I'll see you soon - ohhhh - I had a lifetime sub - mainly to show my support of Ragnar and FC - I think they do a pretty good job. But this new model was in the wind prior to release... so no surprise to me.

Its a bit more difficult to get "connected" in TSW with friends and guildies, because the Cabals are faction specific, you can't have a Templar toon be a member of a Dragon Cabal, etc. You can group cross faction, but PVP and guild tools are not shared. Funcom had a great idea with the three faction approach, but I think they overlooked the actual feeling of "disconnect" that members of existing guilds would feel, especially if their members wanted to choose different secret societies.

My character is still in the dragon guild, i have quit cause there was no one to play with, i loved the atmosphere and the feel of TSW though, it is a great game, just not so fun alone. My characters name in the guild is Sukiko, and i have Japandroid, if we could have some people playing that would be awesome id surely play again if so

Personally, I like the game a lot, I own a Lifetime to it, but I have no intentions of playing it regularly, right now. I have too many games to focus on right now, as it is, including some paid subs. So if folks are expecting that most of us, who posted here, are indicating that you'll find us online... well, probably not.

Secret World really hates my video card - so I have barely been playing (that and being distracted by work and Wintersday and other rl stuff [end of year is the busiest time for me professionally]), but man I adore this game. Wolfie should check it out!

Just a heads up for steam members, TSW is discounted to $22.49 till Jan 5th with their winter sale. Wouldn't surprise me if it went lower on a flash sale during that time as well.

Well, technically their math was spot on. They were just rolling over into another epoch/era. The 14th such one. There are no Mayan predictions of anything special happening on this day other than rolling over their calendar to all zeros and marking the epoch (I am too lazy to look up exactly what it is called) counter up one more notch to 14. That said - man this world event is fun! ALso, I have figured out exactly how Secret World hates my computer. It is a graphical resource hog and my laptop is prone to overheating. Nothing else ever makes it do this unless I put it someplace where the air circulation is poor. Secret World uses these resources way too fast. It sucks that I have a powerful device capable of running on the best graphics settings but I have to set it to the lowest because of overheating.

I made a Dragon on Arcadia nicknamed "Onohana". Also have an Illuminati on Cerberus nicknamed "Nasche". Look me up.

This game was on sale at Amazon for $22 so I went ahead and bought it. Figured doing the storyline quests alone would be worth that amount. Funcom is 0 for 2 (AO and AoC) for me when it comes to MMOs so hoping for some immersion and more lasting appeal with this one.

If my main is Illuminati I can still group with those of you in Dragon and Templars correct?

@Rescorla: Correct, just no cabal chat and no PvPing with us. Anything PvE is playable with anyone of any faction.

You can set up a chat channel which is cross faction...which gets around the inability to chat cross cabals.

I've been playing this the past couple of weeks, along with GW2. Great game - I'm enjoying it a lot! I like the investigation missions, particularly. I am on Arcadia with the following characters: "Doublesticks" - Illuminati "Karyana" - Dragon

Rolled up an Illuminati by the name of "Doucette". I have played for a couple of hours now and can say its been a while since I have been this immersed in a MMO like I have been with TSW so far. Funcom has disappointed me in the past but if the rest of the game is as good as Kingsmouth, then I can see myself playing this game at least one time thru for the storyline quest. One thing I am curious to know is how much different the storyline quests are for each faction.

I got my copy on Steam last night. I will probably give it a try this evening. I am not good at dividing my focus between games, so I do not know how much I will play, but I have heard a lot of good stuff about this one.
