Hey Everyone,

I know some of you do not wish to list your real age, location, etc. I want to ask that if you don't want to list it please do not list it. While it seems funny to be a 6 year old or 120 year old it messes with our demographics.

Why does this matter?

For years Game Developers have brought our family in to top secret projects. They ask me to select people between age ranges, locations, and sometimes even genders to help them test, build, and create panels for their games. I can not effectively do this if people are making up their age or location. It hurts our families ability to provide reliable data to game developers and makes it very difficult to build teams. Our demographics are provided to both game developers and the media (No Names attached) so that they may see if we can fill the needs they require. This is exactly how we were involved in RIFT's creation and Guild Wars 2's creation so if you want to be a part of these things in the future we need acurate messurements.

Bottom line, If you don't want to say leave it blank. Don't lie.

Be sure to update your profiles today as I have added "Gender" to the list and know of one little project where their going to want X number of men and X number of women. I can only involve you if you fill this out.

Also note I've added a new checkbox to hide personal information that will not display name, age, gender, location on your profile.

I have also added Gender to the list and am adding a flag so that you can disable personal information viewing from the site. This will include Name, Email, Age, Location, Gender.

No issue what so ever. No point in hiding here, as your personal info is already available online. As in Birthday, location, sex. it's not like Gaiscioch profits from from that. Plus it helps others know a little better who you are. Might even meet more people who are close to where you live.

I would still be cautious as to what you disclose, as this is still the internet and you need to protect yourself. I think Fog was perhaps making the point about either doing it or not, and not to make up your details as it skews the statistics, which are anonymous outside the guild.

Unless your a member of the guild all personal data is hidden from public eye anyways. You can take it one step further by clicking Hide Personal Data and that hides it from members too. Having accurate demographics helps us get into some really fun NDA binding opportunities that all of us can enjoy.

You know hiding this info seems as useless as when you see a car on tv and they blur out the license plate. I mean why? I can just go and see it all day long in person. Whats the point? Hiding the info on this site seems just as silly. As Kalec said your personal info is already out there for anyone who really wants it.

For me it is not a concern that can you obtain this information about me online if you know a few data elements about my real life. It is more of keeping my personal life separated from work life. I have a position in a company that views my personal life activities as a reflection on them. Unfortunately, the gamer still has a negative connotation in the corporate world, and someone in my position should not have such a hobby. Additionally, I have employees who game and I can not knowingly allow my personal life to blur with work life or risk having HR issues. All I want to do after a 12 to 14 hour work day is log on and be that fun loving voice on raidcall having fun saving Tyria from dragons and the undead. I love being a part of such a large family, always welcoming, always willing to have an adventure. Thanks Fog for adding the feature to disable and I filled out the information you requested.

Demographics will help Fog with setting up appropriate partnerships & benefits that become available to the entirety of GSCH. (the following is for example only:) What if Fog was able to land 50 friends and family alpha testing invites for an upcoming game like Elderscrolls Online, or 3 gaming rigs through Alienware, or a bunch of peripherals from Razer, or just a crapton of swag from various games of guild interest? Vendors, developers, and PR people love to give out free crap if it guarantees more exposure and positive chatter for them, and they will likely want to see demographics that align with the type of person they are marketing toward. If people give answers that are not accurate like "I'm a 1yr old" or "LOL i'm 147 years old" then the only freebies we (as a whole) might qualify for could be diminished to only Desitin and Efferdent. ;)

@ Gjindaan: the right of any player to privacy is not 'silly', for many, many reasons (like identity theft, stalking, harrassment, extortion, defamation/libel etc). I am glad that we give people the option to fill in, or not to fill in personal details, and if they are entered, to allow a 'hide details' option. This is just common sense, as evidenced by numerous privacy laws and legislation enacted in many countries. It is there for very good reasons, and protects the individual. If you want to give out your details to the entire guild, nobody is preventing you from doing so. Conversely, those who wish to employ discretion may do so if they so choose :)

Hexx I'm not saying that people shouldn't have a choice. I spent time defending the right of everyone (well in the U.S. anyways) to have a free choice. All I'm saying is if somebody wants your info, its already out there. Just like the license plate deal I mentioned. My license plate is visible by anyone anytime of the day or night. I'm gonna worry about blurring it out? Obviously some people do. Their choice. I'm just saying I not gonna spend my time worrying about it and to ME it is silly. If someone REALLY wants to steal my identity their gonna find my info, even if I never went online in my life. It's out there in many many public records as is yours and everyone elses. You telling me all the things you mentioned to be paranoid about came into existence with the internet? Don't think so. Think they been going on for like...ever. Don't think the privacy laws and legislation are gonne stop it as, according to the so called "experts" on this, (well the ones selling identity theft services) such things are rapidlly on the rise. (Of course if one really studied this out their are just as many experts claiming it's falling. I have better things to worry about. Of course everyone doesn't feel the way I do nor do I want them too. That would be kinda boring. For me it is silly. For you I guess it isn't. I'm all for people having the option of hiding info or not. I fully agree with your last sentence, and with your first post in this thread. I respect ones right to have, and express, their opinion just as I have the right to my opinion, and the right to express that. That's my opinion ). Regards, Gjindaan

As my father once told me "Son when I was young I had to worry about my neighbors. You have to worry about everyone. Your neighborhood includes the world." If you don't feel safe putting your info out there then don't. Just realize that for me to get you involved with game developers I must have: Full Name, Age, Email, Gender, Location This is the information they require to include you in programs like alpha's and focus groups or playtests. Without it you'll be opt-out of the potentials list. If you want to hide this information from even members then you can do so with the new checkbox I added. That way only elders can see it and can provide your name to game developers as a potential participant. It's your call. This post is not meant to be a debate of whats right and wrong. Lets please stop the debate now. If you want to provide that info then please do, if you don't please don't. Simple and Plain.
