Greetings Everyone,

Last night I received a member join request stating that he saw our recruitment message in /map chat about needing off hours players. I realized that I have not addressed this publicly for our Guild Wars 2 community so I figure now is as good as time as any to bring our newest members up to speed with who we are, what we do, and how we recruit.

Gaiscioch does not blanket chat channel with join requests.

Chat spams are highly annoying to a lot of players and speak of promises. Our family is built on action, not words. We do not recruit people in public channels. We do not approach people to join our family. Please refrain from doing such things. It tends to give us a bad name, makes people think we're a spam invite guild, and lowers our integrity.

Gaiscioch Recruits Through Action And Curiosity

The reason we focus on making our events public is a 2 fold approach. A: To tie ourselves into the server community and ensure that the place we call home endures as long as we do. B: To expose our membership lifestyle to those in the community so that they may see what we do, experience what we do, and enjoy what we do before ever becoming a member. A lot of our membership actually fought against us in DAOC or WAR or RIFT. This is because they see what we do and want to be a part of it. Words are a dime a dozen at walmart, Actions however are a rare commodity. If a person wants to join us they will ask to join us. Not because we claim to be something but because we are something.

Doing Your Part

So in the past you were a recruiter for your previous guild and you'd like to do the same here. Well if you want to help bring people into the family then you need to be well versed in our ways and then take our ways and live them out through the games we play. Give when there is nothing to gain, Help those in need, Practice random acts of kindness, and the entire time you do so DONT push the family name on them. Just smile and welcome them. Kindness goes a long way. They will grow curious and curiosity is what leads them to know and understand who we are, what we do, and how they can be a part of it.

Remember

The Troll dies when they stop playing, the kind hearted live on through all of us.  Look at Errorist. For years that man made a point to try to ruin our server community on Badlands. But the more he tried, the more our lifestyle shined through. In all the Errorist did to destroy us and the Badlands server community in the end it was our kindness that made that server the last server standing. In addition how many of you Warhammer players forgot all about "That Guy". Heck Don & I had to look up who he was in our admin logs to figure out his name just so I could mention this.

In the same regard look at Roger. He went out of his way for people, made them feel wanted and important. Gave without reward, cared when others cared not, and helped those who were helpless. Today he has a server and an NPC named after him. He lives on through all of us.

Do you want to be remembered as a wart on the backside of society, or as a hero that changed the lives of those around you and be remembered through your actions and compassion. Be kind, be helpful and in turn good things will be drawn toward you. Kindness and Compassion are our biggest recruitment tools. Use them well!

Foghladha

Does this mean if someone says that they're looking to join a guild, I cannot privately approach said player and tell him about it? It's going to be very hard to get over that habit. XD

Really nice post. To add a humorous note to it; we could threaten the naughty ones with the "admin logs". "If you carry on acting like this you will end up in the admin logs!!" I dearly hope that I'll never end up there.

I do not normally "role play", but have found in this game I enjoy wading into the fray like a "knight in tarnished armor" to reach a downed player or help a player in trouble. I have been whispered a couple times after such events about joining our guild, I linked the website and asked them to read up on the family and follow the join process if we were what they sought. I asked them to whisper me if they had any problems. I hope that was proper.

I joined in rift during the telara saga, i was just amazed w/ the size, scope and...... amazingness of those events and not to mention how everyone in faeblight was given a chance to be a part of it, I knew I had to be a part of it, so I definitely aggree that actions speak louder than words. edit: now that I think about it, I doubt we even need to recruit, people see who we are through what we do, and during every WvW event, I usually get a few people asking me how to join. That is, when I actually look at my chat log (I'm terrible about that lol).

Flik - that is correct you do not send an invite - if they ask you about the guild then you direct them to the website. I know it hard not to say anything to those looking for a guild but there are players who do that and jump from guild to guild. If they ask you in a whisper then once again direct them to the website. I hae to remember that everytime someone whispers me. I hope this makes sense.

I would have to disagree with Narco. Sometimes even the best guilds have to recruit. That being said I understand why we shouldnt just blanket invite. If people are really interested let them go to the website and see if we fit there style of play Draden

Draaden, I get over 30 applications a day of people wanting to be a part of us, we have not had to recruit since our rebirth in Warhammer. And once the Trinity was born, recruitment was never an issue. We found that when we publicly recruited we got people that just "wanted a guild" any guild. They would use us for what we were and left. Never even took the time to register. The people who come to find us through our reputation, and way of life however register, stick around, and participate with the family. I'd rather have a person that shows initiative out the gate than someone just looking for handouts or any guild. We want people who match our way of life, our belief system, and at least have some understanding of how we operate. In all honesty if we publicly recruited we'd fill up so fast with people just wanting any guild that we wouldn't have room for the people who genuinely want to be a part of our family.

Well as an Off-Peak player I can assure you it wasn't me. As much as I'm pulling my hair out at the moment because we have such a small off-peak presence in WvW, I don't spam maps. I do try to recruit off-peak players and guilds to our server through various forums and media but these invitations are more like encouragement to join the server community, not the guild. That being said, if we don't get a decent Oceanic community on Sanctum of Rall soon, I may have to purchase a second copy of the game and divide my time between playing on an "Unofficial Oceanic" server and Sanctum of Rall. I want to play GW2 in it's entirety. Sanctum of Rall isn't providing that for me at the moment.

For those who remember Oldroar, that is the type of behavior that everyone needs to try and emulate. Lately I have been hearing comments and witnessing actions that are selfish, rude, violate chat policies, or reflect poorly upon gaiscioch. Help those who need help, regardless of weather or not they are in the guild, and do so out of the kindness of your heart. Think about what you are saying/typing and if you would do the same if they could see/hear your comment or if they were in the guild. Lastly, no politics, no religious jokes, and try to avoid heated arguments especially you elders. Every person I have refered to this guild has done so after I helped them with something that is how to recruit.

Funny I found this thread. My daughter plays another game entirely with another gaming guild. That guild has a presence on not only Guild Wars 2 but the Sanctum of Rall server. My daughter mentioned that her guild's leader commented to her when she mentioned that her mother was in Gaiscioch on GW2 that he wasn't a big fan of Gaiscioch because he had been experiencing trollish behaviors from our guild (possibly in some thing like WvW or sPvP things). I have talked with my daughter, I don't have "names" but I did stress to her to tell her guild's leadership that if such behavior occurs for them to not hesitate to report the person to Gaiscioch because that is NOT who we are.

Let your daughter know that their GM can contact me at any time if they see someone being a troll. I will cut them out of the family faster than the blink of an eye. We get this at the start of every game. Same thing happened in RIFT. We get a mass influx of people wanting to join and we end up getting both people that don't truly understand how we operate or they are downright trolls. It's very hard to tell a persons personality until you see them in action. We are an open family and give everyone a chance. Hell Tokuzi (Most well known troll in all of rift) was one of us at one point until he showed his true colors and we banned him.

I only answer questions when people ask me about the guild and I always tell them to check out the website and to ask questions if they have any. I usually try to help those around me and be sure to thank those that help me in turn. I'll pop across the world to help a guildie out if I know I can help with what they need. Sometimes I've spent up to an hour just talking to people who need to talk. After all, we are all living beings with a full set of emotions and all our crazy idiosyncrasies to boot. I do have a suggestion about our chat room lobby for GW2. It gets pretty crazy in there at times. I would prefer that negative chat be curtailed and don't start comparing one game with another. Every time someone gets negative or says something about the game being like or not like another game, it gets as heated as a religious or political topic. It's okay not to like something, but if you have no constructive way to fix it, don't bother voicing it. Like the old adage, if you have nothing good to day, don't say it at all. I'm only voicing this now because yesterday I did raise my voice to end a conversation when one person would not shut up when another politely asked them to. I also heard someone complaining that some people talk too much and butt in over others. Because I hate yelling like I wound up doing yesterday, I'm going to start admining the channel if need be. Some of this stuff is not what I want a new member to be confronted with on their first days of the guild. Sure we are all human and not perfect, but we all should know how we want to be treated and remember to do the same to others. Only we can build up or tear down this guild. It won't be an outside force at all. It's the guild reputation as a helpful community builder that made it grow so much in Warhammer, Rift and now GW2. It is why there are over 3000 something game players registered on our site. It is why Fog gets approached by game companies about their games and what can be done to improve them. We are a force to reckoned with, so let's make sure it stays a positive one. With all that said, if you do have issues, I'll gladly talk to you privately and work to find out what is really going on. I only growl when people don't listen the first time to someone asking them to stop something. ;)

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

Yep you`d be surprised what a simple action can do, All thru my gaming going back to EQ in 1999 , i`ve always do little things to help random stangers , from dragging corpses out of a dung for 3 hours even tho i knew none of the people then loging my cleric to rez them. having scavenger hunts for low lvls and rewarding with magic items , setting up a random buff station in a low lvl zone and doing free buff to everyone for a hour or two, helping random people complete quest they couldn`t do solo . I remember once a lower lvl guild was trying to raid Plane of Fear and wiped and they had wiped 5 times trying to rez people and get their gear back , after asking for help for a hour me and about 2 groups of my guildes zoned in and cleared the way to their corpses and rezed them back so they lost no exp . After that we had a lot of their members asking about membership as well as wanting to group up do events together etc , It`s little things like that just random things for no reason that will help you recurit more then any recurit message . then a few months later seeing them apply to the guild and reading their app to see some reference to what i or another guild member did that made them consider applying to the guild etc . None of my guilds activly recurited but we always had a long list of people wanting to join , either from something a guild member did or seeing how we worked etc in game that made them think wow i want to do that as well . Best i can say is just play the game and be yourself , and people will seek you out , try and answer any questions and always direct them to a elder and the guild website for more detailed info .

Yup, ofc.  Have them register, fill the data out and clicky the Join buttons.

Side note:  At first, I was a bit confused, because I've seen some folks /map announcing about the TS server and whatnot, but not guild recruitment, so thought Fog had some issues come in and bumped this.  I see now that it wasn't that, Kitty went bumpity bumpity from the bottom of the pile.  :)
