I am new here myself, but I can say that I had my fiancee sign up with the site form/secret word thing. She hasn't been able to get an invite due to the GW 2 invite bug, but were both on the site. Hope that helps.
You will want both/all players in your family to have website memberships and to claim participation and advance in guild rank. My fiance played a couple of months in Rift, but didn't do much with the website. Consequently now we can't be in the same GW2 guild together until she gets caught up. Don't have to "apply," per se, just make accounts. Hopefully, in-game guild invites will get resolved soon. Glad yall are with us, slainte!
