I beta tested, had the misfortune of preordering and playing at launch. Before my free 30 days was up I unsubbed and predicted this. Great concept, horrible development and implementation. Sad really.

I had the same experience as Bivrip. I did not have high expectations to begin with, had access to a few of the beta weekends and was convinced enough to buy the game but only lasted about 1 week after launch before losing interest and giving up. I really only like the original Star Wars Trilogy, never really liked Biowares KOTOR version of Star Wars and really didn't like the game overall. I haven't really liked Bioware since they got into bed with EA. The only games I did like from Bioware were Baldur's Gate I&II, Planescape Torment and Dragons Age: Origins. There will never be another Star Wars MMO that can capture the feeling of SWG Pre-CU without remaking it as it was with new shaders & textures.

Their free to play model is pretty awesome actually. It makes me mad I actually paid for the game. You get the full story quests from 1-50 with the free account. So the whole solo RPG adventure pretty much, which is by far the best part of the game.

EA Game goes Free to play = Game eventual Death. EA usually doesn't go free to play if they do usually means they are starting to write off a game. I had little hope for this game from the start with EA managing it and thus why I never tried it other than at PAX.

beta tested, purchased, quit, won't ever play again. This coming from the exact same company that said Steam was cheapening the game industry by offering games at a 75% discount. So, EA launches this HUGE mmo that's suppose to be the next coming of christ, it fails in a year, so they make it freemium??!! How is that not cheapening your game? I'll never play this game again. EA doesn't deserve my time or effort. Unfortunately, Bioware is caught up in it.

Cheapening a game? If the way to sell your product is to put it on sale, that's not you cheapening it. The market already did that for you.

As a big KotOR fan (couldn't tell by the callsign ;) ), I'll probably reinstall SWTOR after it goes F2P. For the most part, I enjoyed leveling my Sith Inquisitor to 50. It was the most fun I've had in an MMO as a healing class. I'll probably start a Jedi Consular, since I'd like to see the Republic side of the lvl 33 & 37 Flashpoints.

@Mulch Yeah, some EA big wig accused Steam of cheapening the gaming industry by doing their summer sales which is obviously a load of...poo. I just thought it was ironic that they just announced their "chosen one" as going freemium in less than a year. Hypocrites and morons.

The free play part is just the storylines with very little access to Warzones. The end game content will be restricted to subscribers or the cartel coin purchase option. Basically you buy coins to gain access to Operations. From a business standpoint it looks good on paper. From a gamer perspective the repercussions are vast. I foresee loot ninjas followed by raging over not getting loot to all out exclusion of f2p people. The rated Warzones in my opinion will be the first casualty. On a personal level I don't PvP anymore, which was my passion. The current status of the game would at best warrant the single player f2p experience just to experience the storyline. The Operations go from lawlfaceroll to hardcore only need apply. The PvP is just broke. They put the control client side making it the easiest game I know of to hack your way to the top. We've had so many guilds simply change their name to avoid the stigma of being a known hacking guild. I've a guild mate whos first mmo is ToR basically do a simple google search on ToR hacks and turned up everything from speed hacks, full skill tree, and developer commands. I personally submitted screenshots to bioware customer service of people using "kill" command and saying "so what everyone does it. " the response from Bioware was a threat to ban me for spamming false or doctored information. I don't even know how to use photoshop much less Microsoft paint. I maintain my account because I've met some outstanding people there. It's difficult to log in on a daily basis. I hope to bring as many of them to Gaiscioch as are willing. Sadly I feel when I announce my intention to leave I may lose a lot of them. I remain hopeful this transition will breathe new life into this false prophet, but if you listen to EA's plan it sounds like they have their hands in so many future games they could care less on the future of ToR.

Has ea ever put out a good game that isn't football? Seems they have killed more good producers than helped.

From my understanding, it is technically Buy-to-play, like GW2. From the article, it said you still had to purchase the game, which is 15 dollars and comes with a free month, After the initial purchase, it is then free unless you want to do the instances and such. I tried this out on a free trial, and couldn't really get into it. Highest I got was like level 7 I think.

@ Themau Going freemium isn't the key, its the reported loss of hundreds of thousands of players that is (to me anyways hehe) I'm not even sure my curiosity is up to checking it out after seeing in game shots that make it look like WoW.. in space. Just really now interested in SW past me playing the old xwing vs tie fighter lol

I had high hopes for SWTOR. I played a lot of the beta, pre-ordered, convinced a few WoW guildies to join up with reports of how the game was structured and my play experience, and played for a couple of months. It was great IMO, but the questing got old real fast despite the movie-like, interactive cut scenes on every quest. The PVP was typical except for the CC immunity mechanic and Hutt Ball. I got to level 50 inside of a month and then there was really nothing else to do except daily quests - blarg. There was no real incentive to make tons of alts. The instances grew stale as well and we didn't have enough on to raid. Sigh. Their player base is dwindling and I doubt going freemium will help. It usually is a sign to the gaming community that the game stinks and should be avoided. I think the launch of GW2 will finish SWTOR off, unfortunately. It had a lot of potential, but extremely poor development and implementation as others have said.

I had the option to beta test swtor , and lvled 3 characters to 15 ish over a 5 month period , couldn`t seem to get into it as it felt like something was missing. I told myself before the game went live that it would be a heavy story driven single player co op game , and thats what it turned out to be . I bout the game as it was a short diversion from warhammer and cancelled after 2 months . game could have been great however while the personal story was good they put to much into the personal story, with basicly no change in the story based on how you played it , the outcome was about the same . Far too linear of game play , bad zone desgin, poor pvp ,terrible UI , had they used warhammer UI , desgined zones more like old world of warcraft where both sides after say lvl 20 + all quested in the same area for the same mobs like stranglethorn vale etc that would have helped . no reward for pvp outside of the instanced pvp game , should have done it like warhammer kill a player in open pvp you recieve exp, honor /renown for the kill and random generated coin and loot off the corpse . instead of forcing people to play 1 of 3 instanced battle grounds to grind for medals to buy gear lol . rail system for space combat , so many little cut screens /instances spaceport to airlock to spaceship to air lock to space port etc , you had to zone like 5 times just to get on or off your space ship hehe . Ohwell they should have made it more like star wars galaxies , and the game would have done better then going free 2 play in less then a year .

I didn't buy SWTOR, although my old WAR crew went to it and still has an active guild there. I tried the trial went it came out, gave up on it fast because I didn't like the combat (GW2 has spoiled me!) The story looked good, however, and I could see playing that as if it was a desktop game. Unlike some folks I don't believe that a subscription is necessary for a good game. Nor that free-to-play makes a bad game. It's just different income models (think about the many different ways you can pay to see a movie, a cable subscription is one of em but far from the only one). So I look past the model to the company, and I've been losing faith in EA since my Warhammer days.

I bought SWTOR for my husband and I, played it for a month or two and quit. Don't mind it being f2p because at least I can get some mileage out of what I paid for the games. Not that I intend to play it much but at least I can play it without feeling like I am wasting money. The game is collecting dust on a shelf atm. Same goes for Tera, I got us both (husband and I) games and we played the first month (30 days that were free) and cancelled. Just didn't hold interest for us. I think I was sick of looking at my toons rear sticking up in the air. I played a lot of Human and High Elf toons cause they were the most decently covered. Elin, well don't get me started on that race. Castanic well.... just as bad. I swear the game was designed for guys. The only thing that game had going for it was the combat and that you could use the game controller for it which was nice.

I totally agree with you Cryage... I am a huge SW's fan - stood in line for hours to see each of the original trilogies and some of my fondest memories of movie going are in those first 3 movies. I started playing MMO's just to get the hang of it when SWG was announced. Then was lucky enough to be picked as a Beta tester for the game... I was in the beta for about 8 months - and loved the game... played it for 1 1/2 - 2 years after release and loved almost every minute I was in the game - then came the massive, sweeping changes because the developers sold out their dream and gave in to the whiners. I also tested SW:TOR and even pre-ordered the game. I played for just under 6 months - was part of a great group but but the game just lacked - I can' put my finger on it - but it never hit the right nerve impulses to make me want to continue. I am still a huge SW's fan but but the 3 stuffed Yoda's that reside with me in my abode will have to console me over the mockery that the games ended up making of the genre.

Played my Guardian Jedi up to level 50 in solo play. Got to the end game and my time ran out. Couldn't afford to get a time card so I stopped playing. The free day came up in time for the huge patch and found myself sorta lost. I didn't have the drive to play more of my other lower levs but I might revisit on occasion when it's free. I don't blame these companies for restricting end content so much but it doesn't make me want to spend to get the access, that's the problem.
