Well, I've been involved with TSW forums for over 5 years now and although I can't say that I confirm or deny I am in the closed Beta ;) ... I also can't say anything about it.
I have subscribed for life - I can say that.
The combat itself isn't really much different than GW2 - really, it's not - and actually may be more complex. Certain actives and passives work really well together by building off of each other - such as an active which snares a target, a passive that afflicts a hindered target with a dot, and another one that does an AOE off of afflicted targets.... it gets quite complicated developing an ability set.
Any character can learn any ability - and equip two weapons at any one time. Even though you can obtain any ability in the game from any weapon set you can only equip 7 actives and 7 passives total from the two weapon sets that you have equipped. (Fists, Blades, Hammers, Pistols, Assault Rifles, Shotguns, Elemental magic, Chaos Magic, and Blood Magic).
FC has always stated that this will be a niche game - it won't appeal to the masses. It is based around a storyline - and the story telling is really good - to great - and sometimes awesome, but that is my opinion. It is a story driven game. The main story quests involve solving puzzles and uncovering lore and doing "work" for your faction. Then you have sabotage/infiltration quests which usually can't be completed by brute force zerging but by avoidance of the enemy (there is no stealth) to get to your objective. And of course - killing things is also involved. It is very much a thinking man/woman's game.
Ea is only involved as a partner in the distribution of the game - they have nothing to do with the development of the game. If you love or hate the game it is because of FC - no blame can go to EA and no credit either.
I can't recommend the game for everyone, but then again it isn't designed for everyone. It is more in the line with Eve - meant for a solid player base of 250,000 - 500,000 players (although that is the only comparison to be made with Eve.)
Crafting is very simple. You find things, break them down for materials - arrange those materials in the crafting window into the shape of the item you wish to craft (every item has a different shape) and insert the appropriate tool kit - and you have the item. Higher level items take higher level materials - but there is no crafting skill. No crafting 100 defective widgets to be able to make a widget - then crafting 100 widgets to be able to make your first superior widget... and so on. If you have the materials and the toolkit - you can craft it.
Also - your only real gear is weapons and trinkets/glyphs. None of the clothing has stats - so you dress like you want but when in PvP areas you will wear a uniform assigned to your faction (3 factions) and all PvP is faction based.
Damn, I have gone on way too long.....
HollowOne...
I am Templar. Since no one in Gaiscioch really expressed too much interest - I have a group I will be joining in TSW that I have befriended over the years. I chose Templar since they are based in London, have a society rich with history (founded back in Babylon), and fanatical in their belief to end the Darkness.
If you RP at all, I would suggest picking the faction that you identify most closely with - the faction storylines are going to be really involved for PvE.
Just my opinions.... safe journ.
I will also be playing GW2 - I really like both games, but for entirely different reasons.
