Guild Wars 2 Beta - FAQ / Getting Started

Just thought i'd start putting together a list of useful information. If you think of anything else feel free to add it.

I'm on the wrong server how do I come Home?

1. For the beta weekend you get 2,000 gems all you need to do is open the gem store, select Free 2,000 Gems, enter your information (Don't worry your card doesn't get charged I verified this with my bank). 
2. Once you have the 2,000 Gems logout
3. Click World Select
4. Select Eternal Grove and click Transfer
5. At the prompt click ok.
6. Login as usual.

I can't click Join or Represent but i can see the Gaiscioch na Anu. How do I join?

Relog, try again.

How Do I Get To WvWvW?

1. Press "H" to bring up Hero Window
2. Click on the lower left icon of Crossed Swords
3. Click Be In The Mists
4. You will enter a PvP Tutorial. Do it or Run staight through up the tower. There will be a man with a star there. Talk to him and say I'm Ready
5. This will port you into the PvP Lobby
6. Before you move there will be 2 portals in front of you. The one on the RIGHT (Purple Portal) will take you to any PvE Capital City you like. The one on the LEFT (Blue Portal) will take you to the WvWvW lake. Take the BLUE Portal on the Left.

I am a little confused on how we join the guild. I cant seem to do anything from the Guild Management "G" window. I also tried to /who, but that is not a command in the game. I would appreciate the help. Thanks.

How do you look for the guild?

Join our ventrilo and join the Guild Wars 2 channel. Use your character name as your comment. FULL NAME.

You can also use /team to ask for an invite. I think thats the only channel that though it's broke can be seen by all.

Is anyone else having a hard time getting onto eternal grove? It says unable to complete operation for me.

Yeah, that is a common problem I guess Kethyveris - I have it too.

The whole thing looks like it's down right now, but even without that Eternal Grove is now high for population (probably helped by Gaiscioch numbers) so I've started on Steamspur Mountains.

Tried for several hours to join Eternal Grove, getting error Code=10:4:5:3748:101 which Arenanet has confirmed means the server is full. I've put myself on another server at the moment and put in a transfer request. The queue for that is quite full and it will likely take a while. But I'll join you guys eventually.

Yep - couldn't get into Eternal Grove either.... on another server and requested a transfer but to no avail yet. The good thing... it is just Beta. Probably won't be on very much anyway - with family and all. So have fun - no worries...

This first open beta should give them a HUGE amount of data about their choice of server capacity and the load issues that occur. I've seen or heard of quite a few things that have made life interesting. I even couldn't get back in just before 3pm pst, but it worked out that dinner was ready (I'm east coast). After my usual break of a couple hours or so, when I came back I had no issues. Easiest way to get invite to guild is get in the vent channel for GW2 Ben has set up. Anyone can do an invite that is in the guild already. As he stated, the full name of the character must be given. Once one character is in, all the rest you may make this weekend can also chose to represent without needing another invite. I think guild chat goes across servers, but before I got transferred I could not even see any guild chat I typed so I had some other random bug at the time. I'm one of the few that got my transfer to work quickly, but as stated above things filled up fast and queues are pretty big. BTW, we are blaming Fog for Eternal Grove being so heavily populated. LOL!

Are you guys playing under Gaiscioch na Anu or just plain old Gaiscioch? Im in Gaiscioch but theres only a few people?

These are some GW2 tips for the beta; subject to change before launch, of course.

Tips for New Guild Wars 2 Players

1. Autoloot
   • In the main options menu there is an auto-loot tick box. Checking it saves you having to press ‘loot-all’ every time you loot.
2. All loot, including harvest nodes, is shared!
   • It’s not possible to ‘steal’ someone else’s mob or harvest node
     • Everyone gets loot from a mob whether they solo it, or get help from 20 other players. You only need to do some damage to the mob for credit.
     • When you harvest a node, it’ll disappear for you but it’s still there for everyone else.
3. Help kill mobs to unlock more skills
   • You must do some damage to the mob for credit, but you don’t need to get the kill shot, or even do a majority of the damage.
4. Skills 1 - 5 are tied to your weapons: different weapons = different skills
   • Every class can use several different weapons
   • Unlock all weapon skills as early as possible; it’s fastest in the starter zones
   • Most classes can swap between two different weapon sets in combat starting at level 7
     • Exceptions: Elementalist, Engineer
5. Heal yourself
   • Keep yourself healed using your #6 skill
     • In the early levels, focus on damage to unlock skills and get loot drops
     • Don’t heal others if it means you’ll miss out on credit from kills.
     • Dodge!
       • Use Dodge to avoid damage - it’s fun too
       • Double tap one of your movement keys to Dodge in that direction
       • Or, go into Options > Control Options and map Action: Dodge to a key

Tips for Inventory Management

As a free-to-play game, inventory space in Guild Wars 2 can feel tight. But with a few simple strategies it's easy to manage.

1. Buy cheap 4-slot bags
   • Merchants in the starter areas sell 4-slot bags for 32c each.
2. Craft 8-slots bags
• Some crafts can make 8 slot bags with no leveling: Tailor, Armorsmith, Leatherworker. Armorsmith has the easiest materials to collect: copper ore.
3. Bank your crafting materials from anywhere
• Your bank has a tab that will hold most common crafting materials, and you can put materials into your bank from anywhere in the world. Just right-click the item in your bag and choose “Deposit Collectible”.
4. Sell items on the Trading Post (aka Auction House) from anywhere in the world
• Just right-click the item in your bag and choose “Sell at Trading Post”.
5. Salvage crafting materials from common loot, then remote-bank them
• You’ll get a lot of “white” loot that you can sell at a vendor for cash. If bag space is limited, consider breaking “rags”, “hides” and white armor and weapons down into crafting materials using salvage kits. (Most merchants sell salvage kits.) This will convert your white loot into common crafting materials that you can deposit these into your bank from anywhere.
