You can buy $10 worth of in-game currency to be awarded a beta key for PoE. I did so after playing an open beta weekend. The game is fantastic - great level of detail, HUUUUUUGE passive skill tree for in-depth character customization, FF7-style magic system, devs who listen to players; however, the character models are still very alpha and, to me, it gets rather "grindy" early on (but it's an ARPG, you're supposed to grind for gear!). Also, because of the passive skill tree being the same for every character, and magic being FF7-style, there doesn't seem to be much use for different classes, other than looks and positioning on the passive tree (each class starts at a different spot on the massive passive tree). I have not played D3 yet and played Torchlight 1 for a short period of time, it didn't interest me. I played D2 for *years* (still play on MedianXL, as a matter of fact). Therefore, I cannot speak about its similarities to D3 and TL1 or TL2.
D2 is more similar to how PoE is. PoE is alright, but I'm not to fond of how they do skills. Basically skills are tied to gemstones. In order to equip the skill you have to have a gem slot that matches the color of the skill gem. Where the annoyance comes in is if you happen to find an upgrade and it doesn't have the necessary gem slots for whatever skill gem you use consistently, you're out of luck. While there are items you can find that allow you to change the color of the slot, it's random, so it can get frustrating. Skill modifiers, i.e. +damage and what not, can also get a bit annoying as well. In order for the modifier gem to be applied to the skill, you must place it in a pair of linked gemstone slots. Of course, sometimes you'll run into color issues. Other times, when you want to forge a link, as it's also random, you may not get the link you desire. The passive skill tree is alright I suppose. It reminded me of Final Fantasy X's sphere grid. The game only has two acts at the moment so it's rather short. I guess later they'll probably add more acts. The game didn't get that difficult for me even at the merciless difficulty. Anyways, in my opinion, from what little I played in D3 beta, it's overall better than Torchlight and PoE. Torchlight and PoE, are on the same level in my mind.
Cool thanks for both of your input!
