Still hope for War40K just not as an MMO

Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online News - In Development, Just Not as an MMO

THQ has been hit with massive layoffs and has announced that Warhammer 40k: Dark Millenium is no longer in development as an MMO. A few months ago, Kevin Dent sent out a message on his Twitter account indicating that W40K:DM was essentially dead in the water only to be countered by THQ denying any such thing. It appears that Dent was right after this story hit Yahoo Finance.

"As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features," said Brian Farrell, President and CEO of THQ Inc. “Because we believe strongly in the high-quality and vast creative work that is in production, this is the right decision for both our portfolio and for gamers devoted to this powerful property."

some I know will be disappointed by this change. others that I know will be thrilled by the change. We'll just have to see how it is when it actually comes out and hope that it has GOOD and moddable multiplayer

Well darn, I was looking forward to it too.

Indeed. The dark fantasy and utterly ridiculous dystopia of WH40K would have made an incredible MMO, both for players seeking an epic scale of PvP play and for deep roleplaying. The amount of lore created for this universe is staggering. To be fair, given the state of THQ, reducing the size and scope of the project was probably a given. There's just too much to cover. Even if they limited player creation to the Imperium of Man, which they have stated, that covers Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, Inquisition, Imperial Guard, and potentially the Adeptus Mechanicus, all of whom have sub-specializations and skills. To quote one of the devs, "it wouldn’t be Warhammer 40,000 without tons of stuff hanging off your character, including weapons, scrolls, chains, books, medals, and what have you!" Remember folks, in WH40K, books are for wearing, not reading.

As long as EA doesn't get their hands on it we can still hope. Unless they make it Madden 40K: Dark Millenium
