In a response to a recent post in these forums,  Eiahn said:

Through experience, I can tell you that many do not read those forums, sadly.

Since joining GSCH two years ago, I have been an active poster on these forums, but if what Eiahn says is true I'm wondering if there is any point in continuing since the Discord text channel is apparently more popular with the guild.

Do guild members log in to this website just to update their guild status so it remains in "Good" standing?

Rest assured most people still view the Forums regularly and they are still the central hub of communication for Gaiscioch. That said each person uses the Forums differently. Me personally, I only look through the Recent Discussions sections for post, but I'm a poor example of your average Forum user. The most important thing to consider when posting something for the Gaiscioch family to read is 1: who do you want to reach 2: how fast do you want to reach them.

With the "who do you want to reach" decision always assume that the Forums will reach the entire active Gaiscioch family. I only say that because again Recent Discussions in on the dashboard and everyone sees it if you give a little scroll down. Now if you post in a discord channel you must assume that you will only reach discord users, for obvious reasons. Though I do enjoy discord the text  channels do have their flaws. One of the main flaws is they it's very hard to keep a conversation or thought going over any duration of time. there are often several different conversations happening on top of each other (especially in a gaming community the size of GSCH) and it can be hard to follow a single conversation.

With the "how fast do you want to reach them" decision always remember forums reach people only when they check them where as Discord has channel notifications and even sound notifications so the message reaches its audience much faster.

Personally I like to use Discord for announcements and shutouts, while if I have something I'd like to share with the family as a whole I would post in the appropriate forum. For example if I get a wild hair one night to lead a WvW group or something spur of the moment I'll post in Discord. On the other hand If I want to plan something that is maybe a week out, then you're gonna see a post about in on the Forums. This is so the largest amount of people are able to see it, and I have a place for relevant discussions without Kitty breaking it up with a cat picture (Love the cat pics Kitty!!!).

I hope this helps. Also remember with forums you can check the view count if you are ever curious on whether or not what you post is being read. Just because you don't get a reply on a post does not mean it has not been read. It just means no one had anything to add.

PuaHone, please do not misunderstand what I am trying to say.

I personally always read the forums and try to reply when relevant.

I also am a believer that they have their place regardless of the flow of readers, posters and repliers.

However, if you are referring to the post I am thinking about, I was not seeing answers and thought perhaps the audience that are in game but also in voice chat would for sure see the information if posted on Discord wall.

There is a part of the guild who does uses the forums but I know a good number of guildies don't necessarily use the website to its full potential and so might not always notice forum posts.

I hope it clears out better my view of these forums;).

Thanks for posting your concerns!

Discord = Short Life Posts. Things over a few hours get burried and missed.

The Tavern is long life posts. All important topics are posted here.

Remember this community is based out of this website, not a game. This website is our core, from it we play games together. This allows us to survive after a game dies and fades into history. Our traditions, posts, and history come with us wherever we go.

Nobody should consider abandoning this site for discord which text has a shelf life. Its easy to miss important things on discord. Almost impossible to keep up with chat. Its imlerative that we still take time to visit.

I think of Discord as more in the moment chat. It goes by so fast I can never keep up with it. The forums are a nice place for reference material, things that take more thought, greeting new members, etc. I check the forums most days. Really, you have to look at it as everyone has their preferred mode of communicaiton. Some like the forums, some like Discord text chat, some like voice chat, some like reading email updates (the monthly updates from Fog), some like to attend the quarterly meeting and see/hear updates live, some like to watch the video later, etc. The point being, if you want to reach more people, use multiple modes of communication.

Goodness, for me Fog states it best above - Its easy to miss important things on discord.  I work an obnoxious amount of hours that completely interferes (lol!) with my game fun time that I'm clueless with the Discord chat most of the time.  I peek at it from time to time as it seems like its fun chatter.  But I certainly hope that the forums stay alive and kicking.

I use Discord when I want to participate in a guild event so I log on and get into the channel the event leader is using.   I spend zero time reading the Discord messages because I want to join the event.  I'm aware that there is forum-like function within Discord because those who used the Jade Quarry Discord when SoR was linked with JQ for GW2 WvW could view a section with recruitment notices posted by JQ guilds.  These are not temporary posts but I gather from the above posts that everyone is talking about the text message channel which has short-life posts.

Wouldn't it be better to post this on the Guild Message of the Day, which shows up in the game chat when you initially get into GW2?   Another guild I'm in, uses the Message of Day to display the week's schedule of events.  Besides as it was previously stated, messages in Discord text chat can get buried and missed.

PuaHone, I'm guessing that you have a concern with a lack of posting activity on these forums.  Would that be a correct assessment? (seems like there's more, though)  Is there any specific resolution that you're hoping for?

Sekkerhund,

I had seen Eiahn's reply (which is quoted in my initial post) to another member post concerning Rift and was wondering why these forums are not being read.  In his reply to that member, Eiahn also stated "You should be able to get more feedback through the discord text channel" so I wanted to know why this was the case.

The resolution has already been provided by Fog in his post (the fourth one above).
