Hey Everyone,

I've done some research and it appears that Human API might be the best bet for integrating your workouts into the Gaiscioch site. This is an experiment and in beta so no telling when i'll have it flushed out.

Additionally For Fitbit users:

I know a few of you use a FitBit and I thought it would be fun to join a group together so we can encourage one another on our progress. If you would like feel free to join us at:

Very cool idea.  I personally don't use fitbit but do use polar products when I am out on my runs.  I love looking at all the data and creating spreadsheets that track my workouts.

I also don't have the fitbit but do use the Nike Fuel, that I won at work.

As a suggestion, how about we create a group on a general fitness site, so that users of none or any fitness tracker can join up? And if it is something we can find apps for, it is even better:) (would also allow people without a tracker to still use the same measures to track things?)

Well darn, I am using my Samsung Gear not FitBit.

I wonder if you could make something so that all of our different devices could be logged in and we could all participate in fitness with friends.

Fitbit just has the easiest API to work with. I don't have a fit bit but you can still register for free and track your workouts there.

Sounds great. :) I'm trying to get back into exercise again, just have been so busy with school and such that it fell off the radar and I gained the weight back. It has always worked better for me to get healthy with a group to encourage each other.

Went ahead and ordered a Fitbit. I tried them before when they were just little clips and had some problems, but the wrist bands look much better. Definitely less conspicuous than the Bodymedia armband I had been using.

Also, if you use MyFitnessPal, you can sync it up with the Fitbit site. Fitbit will send the calories burned data to MYP and MYP sends the food and exercise logged data over to Fitbit. You can read more about that here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/fitbit/connected

I have my garmin linked to "My Fitness Pal" and I'd be interested in using that site to connect.    I've not been active at many GSCH events this past year, since I started running and I've missed connecting with family.  Right now, I'm in 2 training programs offered by a local running store -  a distance running program for a half marathon and a 10 K trail running group.     I will run my first half marathon in September.

What is best in life?

I haven't used anything serious for tracking.  Part of that is because with my MS I have some restrictions.  To top it off this year has been hell for my health.  Last year this time I was walking 2 miles with ease.  This year, nope!  At least I'm fairly stable in maintaining my weight this year while being more seditary, but it isn't easy.

I might get walking further now that I got past everything that messed me up in July.  I know belonging to a group that is just trying to stay healthy and active helps keep one motivated no matter what their abilities are.  I still miss doing martial arts and medieval fighting in armor due to my MS.  Oh well, now I can't do much with lifting over 10 pounds let alone hold on it long anyway!

Thoi - congrats on the running! I did a 10k and two half marathons in May/Sept/Nov 2013. It was tough, but it felt great once I was in shape enough to do it. Good luck with your run in September.

Well I got a fitbit last December, mainly to check on my sleep patterns, helped in determining my sleep apnea.  So did sign up with the group, know being with family might actually motivate me more, than trying to do it alone.  Thanks Fog for doing this, another reason I can give my doctors for being active with my Gaiscioch family, besides playing mmorpg to prevent alzheimers (I know it is a stretch had to come up with an idea to validate my game playing time).

Looked at this more - have a free account where I can manually put some things in though the only thing in there is the whopping 3/4 mile walk I did on Monday.  HA!

For those with a Fitbit, the only wifi sync I can do is with the router in my house.  There is no cell phone service within 3 miles of my house in ANY direction, so I would only be syncing it up and having it upload when at the house.  

So is it easy to sync to just a home wifi router?  I really can't figure out the syncing setup entirely, but find they are being really smart with having it work with tons of phones and wifi setups.

I think this might be something useful for tracking my activity, heart and sleep with my MS just to see what is going on.  I'm just not sure I want to spend the 149.99 for the item at this time and want to have much fuller details from users before I bother.

Briseadh - they have a few options. If you have a smart phone, you can just connect your phone to your wifi network to sync the data, doesn't have to be over mobile data. (That is how I will sync when I visit Dad - he's out in the woods near you in Delhi/Walton/Treadwell area). If you don't have one, there is a PC application you can install - the device comes with a little usb plug in thing that will sync the device to the PC software when the device is close enough to the computer its plugged into. That's how I used to sync my old clip on devices a few years ago before they had smartphone apps to sync to. 

I ended up getting the charge HR - just shipped in yesterday. I like it so far compared to other devices I have used. I haven't tested the HR rate yet on a run compared to my garmin/chest strap, but I've read reviews from other users on it. They have reported that it's pretty accurate - though not good at catching up if you're doing high intensity interval training - probably not an issue for you.

Bri I can tell you I used it mainly to track my sleep patterns, that gave my doctor a good idea of my percentage of sleep (also number of times awake, or restless.  Hence he did a sleep apnea test, found out I did infact have sleep apnea.  With the sleep mask on feel like I look like Darth Vadar's daughter,  dog has gotten used to it, cat a whole different story.

I would have to do the PC app if I was going to do anything at all.  WHY?  I only have a landline phone.  Like I said, cell phones don't work within 3 miles of my house in any direction ROFL.

By the way Rylssa, if you come visit your dad we should figure out how to meet and scare each other.  ROFL!  I'm only 13 miles from Delhi!  I grew up in Hamden.  You may know where that spit of a place is in the middle of what you listed there.  ;)  My parents still live there.

I have had a fitbit since Christmas.  My sister and I linked ours so we can compete at steps.  It has been fun.  It is amazing that it inspires you to do a bit more.  I also use it to see how many calories I have burned and then make sure I eat under that amount of calories.  It has helped me lose 21 pounds since February.

@Briseadh - I do need to visit with Dad soon. I haven't been in a while, he got some new cats when a neighbor left and the house was a bit flea invested - he didn't want me to come by and get eaten alive. Bugs are drawn to me like a magnet. And certainly we should meet up whenever I'm up there again. :)

But yeah, I know where Hamden is, drove through there a few times, mostly on the way to track meets, basketball games, etc. I went to kindergarten/first grade in Delhi, 2nd through 7th in Walton, and 8th through 12th in Delhi, graduated in 2000. Dad is still there where I grew up, about 4mi from Treadwell on a dirt road. :)

Very cool.  I graduated from Delhi in 1986 so that is definitely why missed each other.  Just that tad difference of 14 years in age.  LOL!

Oh, and I can understand the fun of getting fleas out of a house.  Have to bomb the place and then WASH everything if it is really bad.  I'm just glad in the 17 years I've had a pet there was only one summer our dog brought in fleas, but at least we caught it quick enough that I didn't have to bomb the place.  =)

Still haven't popped the question to hubby to spend 150 dollars on the Fitbit I actually want let alone the not so bad 50 bucks a year to have the full use of the site.  I think it would have said my sleep last night was OFF!  I woke up too much.  In free mode it appears I can't really log exercise well, seems it wants miles walked and well for me even housework can be a work out with MS.  =)  I had a pedometer around somewhere from back in the day I was doing fitness through work and Weight Watchers, but that was at least a decade ago now!  That pedometer is probably GONE!  ::chuckles::  Anyway, I joined up, but having issues logging things manually for now.

For those that don't want to or can't spare the extra cash, there is a free app called Nike Running that works using your phones GPS. It is very accurate and I have used my FitBit and the app simultaneously and they are within a tenth of each other. I like the Nike app because it uses my music library to listen to while walking. Having had 4 massive strokes after a lifetime of distance running (over 40 marathons and tri's), I am no longer able to run much, so I walk albeit slowly, lol, but I still track my mileage and times religiously. It's taken me 9 years of almost daily walking to reach the 3 miles I currently aim for daily. So if you are starting out or don't think you are in shape to even start exercising daily, as Nike says Just Do It !!! you will feel better for just trying.

Hah, yeah in '86 I was 4 and probably going to pre-school at that place by the bridge which become a flower shop. Dad's tried all kinds of stuff with fleas, need to catch up and see how that's going, I have some days off around labor day.

 

Yeah, the Fitbit is hard for anything other than walking/running, maybe biking? I log my exercises (and food) separately in myfitnesspal (free) and it syncs up to Fitbit, but usually the Fitbit calorie count is pretty good. It also counts calories for daily activity I would not have otherwise caught, and gives me a better idea of base calories burned on those days I really do nothing all day. I will say that I went for a 5k run yesterday and the heart rate was on par with my Garmin GPS watch/chest strap. I looked at the premium option, but it didn't really have anything I wanted to pay for.

A cool option (other than Fitbit) is Garmin's Vivofit.  We got them for my Dad, Sister-in-law, and nieces last year and they love it.  It has a neat visual cue to encourage you to move.

 

 

I still cannot get my Garmin data into the Fitbit account.  :(  All my data is easily seen in My Fitness Pal (where you can do group connections etc...) if anyone wants to connect there.

I saw there was a place to put in a Fitbit ID of some kind. What should we put there - email address? Those digits they have if you look at your profile page? Or just not worry about it right now?

I actually don't have a fitbit and though I signed up, trying to input stuff is not really easy.  Not like weight watchers was when I used their online tracking.  I am not buying a fitbit any time soon either due to money is going elsewhere.  However, during the winter I'll be on a treadmill so easy to track.  My outdoor walks were a close guess though all my health issues did not make that happen much.

Yeah, my body HATES me every day due to MS, but I still try to do things.  Just have had a bad year this year with other health issues derailing things.  Now that winter is coming I'm walking more again.  Go figure!  good thing I have a treadmill but those of you who see my facebook, you know what my cat uses that for!

I have a garmin fenix 3 watch.  It tracks walking, sleeping and multisport activities.  Mainly got it track my running, but also tracks my lift access runs when I go snowboarding or hiking, biking etc.  I know garmin connect sync with strava for those into running and biking mainly and they have monthly challenges on there.  I know my daily steps are off since I can't take my watch to work yet.  I am also on myfitnesspal if anyone wants to connect.

I am coming off the injured list from an injury in august.  Going from running 80 miles a month and losing 60 lbs to no activity was hard but am happy to run again.  Have a 5k thanksgiving day to help our area food bank, then another one the following weekend.  I have a 50k dec 12th, but I will be happy if I can make it to the 2nd aid station at 7.7 miles before the cut off, if I do i'll just goto the next aid station (~15 miles)  and call it since I dont want to get injured again.

Any updates on this Fog?  In the next few weeks I'll start training more than I am now.  Currently at 20ish mpw that will increase to 30-40 over the next few months.  I havent been able to get on as much as I'd like.

I got the Garmin Vivosmart to help me get in shape for a 5K, but since the Fitbit Zip only are $50, I got one to join in this group without trying figuring out how transfer my steps to Fitbit.

Hi! I recently gave my well loved Fitbit One (my constant companion for 4(?) years) to my well loved friend. I have "replaced" it with a Samsung Gear S2 (got it free!!). Lots of apps will interface with one another. If you use MapMyFitness it will connect with MyFitnessPal will link up with Fitbit will link up with Samsung Health etc etc. Sorry--I started skimming at some point and this might all be old news. I'm new here, by the way.

The device apps I have used do not have native support for importing step counts. There's an app (Fit and Healthy) you can get (on android at least) that will let you sync your step count from Fitbit to various other device apps and also, if you pay, from other trackers to Fitbit. I haven't paid, yet, so I don't know how good it is. It will not allow you to participate in Fitbit challenges, though. Perhaps those would best be handled on a more general app.

On the confessionals/introductory side of things, I attended my Zumba Fitness instructor class and got certified last month. I'm looking to have that get me exercise and gas money until I graduate (college. third go round. I'm getting too old for this) in 2 or 3 years. I have a ways to go before I realize that goal but I'm totally on it. Burned an estimated 4k calories on top of the basal rate, yesterday, in 4.5 hours of dedicated working out. The stars aligned. I usually don't have so many things to do or places to go.

Hi all. I know this is an old thread but was there ever a fitness site decided on for everyone that had different trackers so that we can all "get fit" together? or are there plans to possibly make a discord channel maybe for fitness? I have a fitbit but mostly I track my food and work outs on My Fitness Pal.

I am on the Loseit Reddit group and Discord and follow lots of people on Instagram that have lost a lot of weight. Seeing other people's journey and talking with others gives me courage. I have lost a total of 100# from my heaviest. 65# of that has been since May of this year and I am only 15# from my first goal weight. I am always looking to make new friends because encouranging each other does make a difference.

Has anyone here tried Nerd Fitness? It sounds like something GSCH people would try, and I'm not willing to commit to putting such a large amount of money towards their NF Academy experience unless someone else can verify it's worthwhile.

Love these ideas and so glad this thread got rezzed.  If this is still going or we can get it going, count me in.   "The struggle is real" as they say, but joining in with others makes fitness more fun, for sure!

That Nerd Fitness site does look cool and fun but I just cant spend that kind of money on the Academy. I don't even have a subscription to My Fitness Pal. I just use the free parts. It does say you can create your free character but I have not done it yet.
