Hiya I know there are some computer minded people in the guild and I was wondering if I could run this past you all. My friend suggested I get this computer as a gaming laptop. I mentioned it on the facebook page that I wanted a laptop that could run ESO and games as graphically intense like Shadow of Morder. I just wanted to double check and get some different opinions/choices. He thinks Lenovo Y50 (59428533) Gaming Laptop Intel Core i5 4200H (2.8GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit T

The website with the specs is here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834317890

If anyone gets a chance to look I would appreciate some opinions. Trying to keep it under $1000.

Thanks

Berkanna/Thyth

I don't have an opinion on the manufacturer, but I can tell you the three things I would suggest.

1. make sure you get at least a quad core I7 processor. There are bigger, but a quad core will make a big impact.

2. Ram is the cheapest way to upgrade a system, I would suggest 16 GB

3. Hard drive speed - look for at least a 7.2k hard drive. the one listed here is 5400 rpm.

The graphics card is fine as it is discrete (dedicated to graphics) and screen size is a preference.

A couple of places to look for systems are www.Cyberpowerpc.com,  www.digitalstorm.com  and www.ibuypower.com

I would also scope out some of the bigger manufacturer's Outlet sites for deals...i.e. Dell, Asus, Microsoftstore...etc.

Gratz on the new gear!!!

I mostly agree with Brace, but when it comes to the HDD. In a laptop the HDD is 2.5" diameter in a desktop the HDD is 3.5". So, a 5400 RPM 2.5" HDD is as fast as a 3.5" 7200 RPM. Check around at different places to buy, also check manufacturers websites, you can usually customize laptops directly from the manufacturer.

lol...alright, gotta put my nerd hat on.

The reason I recommended going with the higher speed hard drive (7.2k hard drives come in 2.5" also) is that the faster a disk spins, the quicker it can either read or write to it. It will be able to perform more input/output operations per second which is commonly known as IOPS.

Now there are other variables that play a part in actual speed or performance such as read/write ratio, latency and queue depth to name a few, but at the end of the day, the faster your system can access data, the quicker it can perform tasks.  So, faster drive...faster access

Nerd hat off* :)

Thanks for the links! Very helpful information so far! Scary to think about upgrading a laptop though but if its just memory I have done that. Great links too thanks, but the one above goes to a desktop. I will look on that site for some laptops though and see if I can figure out how to find one according to the specs everyone has mentioned.

Things have changed so much since the last time I built a computer which was around 2001 lol

I got my son a Lenovo with a dedicated graphics card smaller than the one you were looking at as a desktop replacement since he was off to college, it has a nice, solid feel to it and has worked his gaming very well for the 800 I spent. It obviously is not a high end gaming laptop but for our budget, Lenovo has performed very well.

My suggestion would be to go the other direction, pick your dollar amount (include about $100 or so for accident insurance) and them maybe hit some guru sites and ask for suggestions on builds for that budget.

something else to consider might be a decent sized SSD drive (for the games) in addition to the regular HD :)

please note here that I will never claim to be a guru because I know just enough about this stuff to know that I dont know squat about this stuff. 8)
