Does anyone know if it is going to be possible to make a character that doesn't use magic at all in ESO?

Looking at the base classes with fancy names such as DragonKnight, Templar, Sorcerer and Nightblade, I'm finding it a little concerning that I might be forced into using magic to play at a competitive level when I'd really prefer to just play a traditional warrior or rogue style character with no magic whatsoever.

That's an interesting point Elth.

I imagine you could just spend all your points in the assassination tree under the Nightblade class.  You would have a few magic spells at your disposal, but you could choose not to use them.  Just focus on stamina and melee.  You would be able to use any weapon you wanted, and wear whatever armor meets your needs.

But you are right, it seems there may not be any 'pure' combat class.  But the game isn't out yet, so anything is possible.

If ESO follows the normal character creation you will never have to touch magic. All weapons and skills should be leveled as you use them, so if you choose not to use magic just focus on dps -> stamina/melee.

Nightblade is essentially your rogue type class, DragonKnight your warrior, Templars your healers.

Kinda makes me wonder if they will bring back Dragonborn -> would sooooo make a warrior then XD

If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely.

Don't think they're gonna have dragonborn. Wasn't the DB you play in skyrim the first one in forever? Shouts could be possible, but I doubt it, since people who aren't DB have to train forever to learn even a word.

I'm ranting now, I'm sorry, I just really hope that Zenimax didn't screw the pooch in this regard.  In every Elder Scrolls game I have ever played, going right back to Daggerfall, I played either a Barbarian, Knight, Thief or Archer or a personal mix of the abilities they had.  I never used the magical schools unless I was playing a specific character that used magic, so I really hope that I have the same options in Elder Scrolls Online.

they have the same options in ESO. You play your character how you like, there is no restriction. You can be a heavy armor Sorcerer if you want.

@Ragmar -> Good point, for some reson my mind totally blocked out the fact that ESO is taking place before the events of skyrim so that would mean no dragonborn lol. I do hope shouts make an appearance though as I had fun using them once I figured out how to work them into my attack rotation XD

@ Elth -> Like Kalec said, you play your character how you want. If you want to wear heavey armor you wear it, if you want to be some crazy magic weilding full plate wearing kill things with a greatsword type character you can. You aren't bound to any specific skill tree so if you don't want magic you don't put any skill points into it. I've never used magic on any of my characters as I prefer the 'wade in and kill all the things' method of play XD

Got this from elderscrollsonline so hopefully this will help ease your worry :)

The tradition of all TES games is to allow the player to level up weapon mastery for any weapon type. ESO has the same system. As you level your weapon you will get new skills that will increase their efficiency. These skills will level independently from your normal class skills, and will change depending on the weapon you are currently using.

Health, Magicka and Stamina trees can also be found in ESO. All these pools depend on how you spend your skill points. It is your choice how to use points. You can use them all to increase only one attribute or several attributes. You are free to develop your own “build”. Such system allows to create a unique character with unique points’ distribution depending on your will and playing experience. Imagine the ability to create a fire wielding healer or stealth based mage. ESO opens up some interesting possibilities.

All your gameplay will be affected by the way in which you spend your skill points. For example if you spend most of your points to increase Health you are developing your protagonist as a warrior or tank. If you prefer Stamina you will be a damage dealer. But the distribution is not strict and you can decide how to develop your character.

If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely.

I understand that according to the "Ask us anything" interviews that they tell us we can play how we want. However, after going over the class skills listed on Tamriel Foundry, I am still a little concerned that there will not be a "Viable" non-magic option.  Every single one of the classes, Templar, Dragonknight, Nightblade and Sorcerer in every one of their skill trees listed, use magic, whether it be teleporting nightblades or Dragonknights using lava whips.  This is what has me quite anxious on whether or not I will purchase the game.  In single player elder scrolls, I had the option and it was a viable option to opt-out of using magic, I think I am going to hold off purchasing until I can get that guarantee.

@ Soren, that link you provided with the class skills, I could not find one skill in there that wasn't magical in nature.  /sigh

That's a good question; if you think about fantasy MMOs in general, typically every class has "magic" of a sort--rarely is a class purely believably physical in all ways, even warriors and thieves have something supernatural about some of their abilities.

Being purely physical in single-player Elder Scrolls is easy, because the combat isn't centered around "abilities" like an MMO traditionally is. You just swing your sword over and over and over and over.

A warrior class with no abilities would not fit in a traditional MMO. Imagine playing a character with only an auto attack, and nothing more... because that's basically the equivalent of what you would have if they ported the combat directly from the single player experience.

I have no idea what ESO combat is like, but my guess is that there are magic flavored abilities and physical flavored abilities--I'm sure you'll be able to make a build that is purely physical. Making it viable might be a challenge... but isn't that what life is about? Do you really just want to do the FOTM build (which you know will appear as it does in every MMO), or do you want to craft your character yourself and make it work? Typically it is pretty easy to make any build in an MMO work, as long as you don't actively gimp yourself.

So don't write it off just yet! At least play the open beta (assuming they'll eventually have one) to see how you feel about it.

I can name four modern MMOs right now that had non-magical warriors though, DDO, WoW, AoC and GW2 all did the heavily armoured no magic/low magic warrior very well.  So far, DDO and WoW and possibly the Barbarian from AoC have done Rogues quite well also.  We'll see how ESO fares

I can see what Elth is talking about... Special abilities like shield bash, charge, whirling blades, thrust, throwing the sword, rapid fire and the like - while they are special abilities typically aren't considered "magic" - maybe "super human" but it isn't like breathing fire or turning yourself into a tornado.

True, but compare those abilities to what you can do in Elder Scrolls single player. The only physical things you can do are shield bash and swing a weapon. Imagine if they ported that combat system directly into an MMO.. it would be a snoozefest. Though, I already kinda hate elder scrolls combat, so I am pretty biased. Skyrim was acceptable, but still just really boring and easily exploitable.

But - that is just it - we don't know for sure what it will be like - so we have to wait and see.  Since they have stated you can wear any armor, use any weapons.... I would assume that there is something associated with these things to make them "unique" or we would all wear the same armor and use the same weapons.   Until we see an actual skill list we just won't really know.
