Thinking about getting this game but wanted to know for sure.

I heard that at 45 you are always flagged for pvp, is this true or can you turn the flag off?  It's not that I am against pvp but when I am doing pve stuff I don't want to pvp.

Also is it true that if you can turn off the flag you can still be jumped?

Thanks all.

Once you hit 45 you are alway able to be attacked by another player if they choose to flag. They will lose Karma in the process and if they lose too much they will not be able to go into cities or towns, as the guards will kill them on site. It also allows any player to kill them for no penalty.

We aren't to that point yet, but it should deter most unprovoked PvP. If you do get attack, you'll suffer no penalty, and you can just switch channel or call for reinforcement.

Cheer!

I also wanted to add, once you are 45 not only are you tagged for PvP, but your entire family (alts) are PvP tagged. 43 might be a good time to level your alts if you don't want this. ;-)

That's correct, Cerulean. In my opinion, though, I don't think griefing will be a huge problem in BDO because of the Karma system. From what I've heard, it rarely happens in Korea or Russia.

I would NOT worry about it. Almost all of the fighting that has occurred was due to guild wars being proclaimed and some fighting over things in the actual contestable areas has occurred - where I definitely haven't been yet.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

I was not aware of it flagging all your alts, too. Thanks for that info, Nadaji, it is going to come in really handy in planning my play schedule with alts.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about this very much. Most of the guild fighting will be around key points on the map and those players really arn't trying to go out and look for those people they are really only declaring war on those guilds large enough to contest them for popular grinding locations. I see many many people at 45 plus just afk'ing in non-safezone just chilling out autofishing.

Plus if you join us we will be here to help you out if something like that happens. Also you don't loose much from death to a player in this game. Just 2% xp and a small chance at a gem exploding. Nothing to major.

I did not want to start another thread, so I hope its ok to ask this here and that it gets seen. Is this game casual friendly? Or are the systems designed in such a way that you really do need to put in a decent amount of time every day/week to experience the game in a state that is not subpar? My playtime just is not what it used to be and I worry that with limited play time I will spend most my time micromanaging systems instead of playing heh. I would appreciate any feedback from experienced players. I think on average I will have about 15 to 25hrs free a week to play. Thanks!

There is alot that a player can do AFK in this game and there is plenty to do in the game for casuals. Granted you get what you put into it so if you just want to casually play you can do that but I wouldn't expect to be leading the charge into battle anytime soon.

Get on discord and talk with us some time. Neoyoshi, Xcelius(myself), and Sharynne seem to be the most knowledgeable of the game so far. If you want I can stream my gameplay sessions so you can get an idea if you want to try the 7-day trial.

I am on a 7 day trial right now. I like the gameplay so far. A little confused about some systems, but that's what youtube is for :)...There will be for sure times I play more hardcore, but it will be mostly casual because of other obligations (mainly a 22 month old daughter). Also when I say casual, I mean just in number of hours played. I do really like to dig into my MMOs. So I guess I am casual on time and hardcore on making the most out of my mmo gaming. I will need to jump in and chat when i have a chance. I was just worried that I would not be able to participate with the guild because I would be so far behind (not in levels, I hear levels are easy...just everything else takes time).

We were talking about the complexity in chat today, and I made the comment that this game is like "a nuclear onion on megasteroids, because it's layers' layers have layers".  It does require a lot of patience and exploring, the first game where rushing to cap level is not a good thing...

This is the system intended to deter excessive PKing.

http://www.blackdeserttome.com/wiki/Karma

Much harsher than Archeage's crime points, not nearly as harsh as Eve's concordoken.

With hard work, a player could do enough "community service" pre-emptively to store up positive karma and get one free PK.  Save up a max 300,000 karma . . . lose at least 210,000 karma for the single PK

I'm not certain whether karma is character-based or family-based.  (Easy to check when I get home.)

If it is only character-based, then it would be a simple matter to keep one alt in the family just for carrying permanent negative karma, and escaping consequences on the rest of family.

If it is family-based, then I suspect there will be little to no significant PKing in BDO.

Looks like it's per character. However what I'm going by is the fact that my lvl 35 has 210k karma and my lvl 13 has 813.

Can I "accidentally" hit someone else? Like let's say we are fighting the same mobs and in my wild fighting combo smashy smashy style I hit them... is that a thing?

No that is not a "thing". In order to pvp you have to be attacked and\or flagged. It's an active process in order to under take it. I posted another thread about it today from the PVP'er point of view. Thread is called "Life after 45" go read it a bit.
