So I have reading about the excitement of BDO and watching some videos.  Very pretty graphics, appears there is a lot of aspects to this game.  I took a liking to Eve Online about two years ago, loved the aspects that have nothing to do with combat (exploration, resource gathering, etc).  I found it engaging and requiring some skill and savvy.  With that said, I was really stoked to see a game like Archeage come around because it looked like fantasy version of Eve.  And wow! Was I ever burned by that game.

So the question here is (it it does help if you've played Eve but is not necessary) that is all this stuff that you can do besides PVP and grinding mobs a good use of your time?  Or is it a distraction or a means to help you gear up?  And is it engaging enough that it would be all you would want to do?

Well I have played BDO just now couple days and so far I have been enjoying myself. As it is buy to play there isn't subscriptions like Archage, which I only played for a day, because you couldn't have all the stuff as f2p. What I have understood that BDO you can have all without buying anything extra except the game. Sure there will be micro transactions as it seems to be norm in MMO's, but I'm assuming that every stuff will be purely cosmetic.

I have also played EVE and while it was fun from time to time, it became boring quite fast. It will be fun to see how things are done differently in Star Citizen.

The most important thing in life will always be the people around you. Salud, mi familia.

It's nothing like Archeage.  I'm one of the few remaining members of this family that still play Archeage, daily.  BDO blows it right the **** out of the water.  BDO is what we thought Archeage was going to be.

BDO is a hybrid.  It's part MMORPG, part City Sim.  Most hybrid games haven't worked out well, but we'll have to see about this one, I think it might just cut it.  It depends on if the RPG-preferred crowd is satisfied with the "endgame" or not, and what they're willing to accept.

GW2 had no definable endgame and it ran along just fine.  IMO, it's worse off now, ever since they caved in and added endgame content to it with the expansion.  I'm hoping that by summer, they'll have addressed a lot of my disappointments.

Back to BDO, it's a very complicated, in-depth game, if you try to fully explore it's potential.

Similarities to Eve include:

No map travel - you have to travel in the world

No global storage - what you store in one town's warehouse is not available to you in a another town's warehouse

Node Management = Planetary Interaction  (If you liked PI, you will LOVE node management)

Complex tiers of crafting

Different from Eve:

You have to discovery combinations of ingredients that work.

You dont lose all your stuff when you die.

The consequences of PKing are severe.  Imagine EVERY solar system was high-sec.   Not quite that etreme, but still pretty harsh consequences for the aggressor.

The game is a lot more like Archeage than it is like Eve.  Think of it as Archeage-lite.  An Archeage version where they've got everything so locked down that no one will bother trying to agitate anyone else.   So basically nothing like Archeage at all.

Hmm, I may give it a whirl.  Is it live to everyone?  If not, when will it be?  I want to make sure I start like two weeks past that date.

It is live and you can pick it up anytime. I would suggest if you are on the fence to ask for a 7 day friend trial key, that way you can test the waters and see if it is something you'd enjoy.

I played Eve for 15+ years and while certain things are similar as Kale stated above, you can't really compare the two. BDO is nowhere near the depth Eve's crafting/trading/corps have but it does follow along in the same vein. The open world, node management and crafting are about as close as you are going to come.

@Kale: The consequences of PKing are severe.  Imagine EVERY solar system was high-sec

Could not have explained that any better myself :D

If you meet yourself on the testing track, don't make eye contact. Lab boys tell me that'll wipe out time. Entirely.

To add to Soren... it's kind of like High Sec everywhere but not exploitable.

It's live, but it is Buy to Play.  It is also regionally IP blocked.  That means if anyone lives outside of USA, Canada, Mexico, Europe or Australia, they will not be able to access the servers.  Region licensing issue.

(Don't mention VPN as a bypass option, because Gaiscioch is NOT recommending VPN for our blocked members.  Daum has been blocking VPNs in other regions, so it's a possibility of wasted money and time, which we don't want our members to risk.)
