The Story of Sange

Sange

Anyone who says battle is glorious has never been in one. Sange hated every moment of it, the smell of sulfur, clashing of swords, and the flash of mage fire making it seem as if the world were coming to an end. And, this time, that may very well be the truth.

Rendra and Caleb stood shoulder to shoulder with him. They'd been together for a long time and the horror of battle drew them even closer. Sange even came to appreciate Caleb's disturbing undead pets which coupled well with his elemental and fire skills and Rendra's storms.

Every battle seemed like it would be the last, that had always been true, but something about this one was more so than usual. They just kept coming. The defiance and their machines coupled with the rift born abominations poured over the hills until they seemed endless. He was shaking from the energy he poured into his spells, how long it had been since he'd had a meal or sleep he couldn't remember.

He turned to see Rendra and the hollowed cheeks echoed the way he felt. Ashen skin was out of place on her fair face, she was never born for this. He looked over at Caleb and while he was always pale, the look in his eyes told Sange that Caleb felt it too. There were too many.

The worked there way up to a hill better to defend. He called another elemental, how many had perished from his calling made him ill to even think of it. But, he called another and sent the creature forward as constructs made their way up the side of the hill. Bodies piled before them, the machines kept coming with their twisted masters driving them on.

He heard a gutteral cry, then another and then it just kept going until it was one frustrated growl. He glanced at Rendra then Caleb nodding as they returned it. It was all the chance they had to say goodbye before they summoned the last of their strength to rain magefire down across the unnatural enemy. But, hellfire came to their fingers and continued until their growls became screams.

Rendra fell first, her noble born frailty couldn't stand the torture at last. Caleb went under several of the constructs, the screams were the last thing that echoed in his ears as the undead captain lumbered towards him with sword drawn. He hurled the last of his energy with an enraged scream putting all that he was into that last blast of power. The shockwave flattened the battalion, but he never knew that and probably never would.

Reborn shaking with the rage he had died with it took him a little longer than usual to get his bearings. Dying was easy, coming back was hard. He had no idea if Rendra or Caleb had been returned, those among the Vigil either didn't know or wouldn't say. But, he would find them one way or the other. And leave death to the enemy in his wake, they would remember his name this time.
