The Story of Lillandera

The furnace of the unspeakable pains

Once upon a time, Lillandera had a life, a family and a simple landscape of future ahead of her. Second daughter to a woodworker and a herbalist in the Nordlands, she only had thoughts to the simple house chores and to the petty talks of the village youth. Being one of the prettiest girls around, with her fiery hair and deep green eyes, she spent her days daydreaming about the young lad she would chose to be her husband. Aside from the simple daily chores of a frontier girl, she had little else to think about. And then the Nordsmen came.

The small wooden house where she dwelt with her parents was one of the northernmost ones, and on the night of the first raids, they were one of the first to know the cruelty of the savage men of the north. Her father was felled by a northman's axe way before he could grab his spear after the house's wooder door was brought down by the raiders. She could only her his gurgling scream in the middle of the mayhem, for she couldn't look back to see the scene. Her mother was still yelling, urging Lillandera and her elder sister to flee by a window, when the northmen took her. Lillandera didn't look back, and tears almost made her blind while she tried to escape through the moonless fields. She couldn't find her sister -- maybe she looked back, and couldn't go on. Lillandera tried to reach the other houses of the village, but her young legs were no match to the trained runners of Norsca. And when they reached her, and brought her down to the ground, she could hardly know her nightmare was only about to start.

Dragged back to the house, she was forced to watch while the Northmen her father's dead body, aparently just by the pleasure of watching her shock. She could see her sister laying in the ground in a corner, naked and deadstill, with her head tilted in an impossible angle. Lillandera's mind was starting to drift away, thinking if they brutalized her sister while she was still alive, or if she was already dead when they did it. She would still ask herself the same question every night when she tried to sleep, trying to brush away the memories of what the Northmen did to her, repeatedly, that night. Even after all this time has gone since that night, her missing eye -- taken out by the own deformed hand of a northman while she screamed of pain and despair while he raped her -- still hurts with a shallow and hopeless pain.

And it was there -- naked, wounded, devastated by the situation, wracked by pain, almost suffocating of despair under the weight of that savage man -- that her powers manifested. She was too broken to understand when all the world around her was set ablaze. She even asked herself silently, swooning dumbly, if all that light could be the dawn coming through the shatered door. And then she noticed she was screaming all the time, and fire exuded from her every pore as if it was part of the scream. All around her she could see the wooden walls combusting, but the sound of her conflagrated scream swallowed the screams of the northmen that were burned to cinders by her rage.

And then it seemed it all became very silent. And absent to her own situation, half-mad and as charred inside as the wooden debris that once were her home, she started walking. And it was then that Enkore Breightan, Bright Wizard that lived on the outskirts for the farmlands and woke up with the sounds of battle, found the poor girl wandering by the burning fields, bleeding and pale as ghost, eye absently staring at the fires, repeating to herself like a dreadful mantra -- "i'm the furnace of the unspeakable pains...".

After being cared and trained by Enkore, maybe the only person that she learned to care for after the death of her family, Lillandera quickly grew up to become a bright wizardress herself. And her mind is still a conflagration of hate, burning inside the furnace of her body and soul, full of pain... unspeakable pain that only fire can express.
